In fact it's been since 10 a.m. virtual fog-out / white-out, and far, far colder with a creeping little North Westerly.

True of this bit of the Pennines, too - except that the mist from yesterday hasn't really lifted, so we didn't get the pre-10am "reprieve". Temperature down to 7 degrees, too - but a fresh, clean edge to the air that made walking refreshing.

I wasn't sure if this subject merited a separate thread on Platform 3, but an interesting suggestion has just been made on a meteorological forum, to the effect that the BBC, having ditched its long-lasting contract with the Met Office, may now be having to crowd-source their information from viewers in order to continue collating the data necessary for making forecasts.

Quite a month already - warm and sunny on the 1st, heavy mist from the 2nd to the 4th and rain yesterday and today. And now, at twilight, sunshine and rain have reulted in a bruise-blue sky, that strange orange light (glowing off the stones and bricks of the neighbouring houses) - and a double rainbow, with the sky appearing darker on the "outside" of the main 'bow. I am very lucky with the views were I live.

Truly awesome and breathtaking - but I'm probably seeing it from the best vantage: indoors!

The consensus of official forecasters seems to be lining up in favour of a significant drop in temperatures to below the normal coming in on north-west winds around the 13th of this month, and lasting through to December. In the meantime they're expecting another 4 days of these exceptionally high temperatures, followed by a couple of days at around the 10 C maximum mark for the Midlands and South. So, make the most of it then, folks!

It's very pleasant up here in Town today - 15 C on t'mountain, which must mean a few degs higher in Whitehall. Washing's out on the line - unusual for this late - though I rather think humidity more than temperature will be the deciding factor.

Would I be right in thinking you must live in a narrow, wind-channelling valley, Drac? Rather akin to the effect of standing betwen two skyscrapers in the City on an elsewhere near-calm day?

I'm thinking that that fact might account for your experience being at variance to less location-specific forecasts.

Just above - like two hundred yards - is steep land 1500' or so, and there are ghylls which run NE/SW. Any wind from either a vaguely southern or vaguely northern direction gets squeezed and accelerates down those ghylls. SW winds have nothing to block them between us and the Irish Sea / Atlantic

So, yup, we can cop it.

Bit early to say what will happen today, weather wise but I think today not too bad.
