Monsoon like rain at sunrise, off and on nastiness since, BUT also very decent sun, rising NW wind.

I walked out with the dog this morning to see a perfect rainbow against a blue sky! It's been a lovely bright fresh day here in S Yorks.

... and yet just a few miles North, we've had a mixed day - several sudden, short but heavy downpours constantly punctuating the sunshine. Set off for a walk in sunshine, within ten minutes, I was soaked!

Never mind. I hope you're listening to the Mahler. The Great Adagio has just started

Looks likely to be quite nice everywhere now for the next week at least - not particularly warm anywhere mind, and if you haven't already, (I have, twice), you may feel a need to turn your heating on for those colder evenings

... don't people have thermostats? There are various heating systems (gas and electric) in this house, and we have set the thermostats to various temperatures. No decisions as to 'turning on the heating' required - but o the joy on a chill morning to pad barefoot into the bathroom and find that the underfloor heating has kicked in...

I try not to use the boiler at all in the warm months, as I have solar water heating - but this year it needs attention and it is disgracefully easy just to turn on the boiler instead.

Wish I could manage with just the solar and my open hearth and gas fire (in separate rooms).

There are times of year, I find, when thermostats don't quite answer...

... sadly it falls to me or mme v to prepare and light the open fire in the main living room on winter evenings - but, as I say, for all other heating, thermostats seem to work well; not often that we need to over-ride the settings.

This is true. At this time of year with chilly nights but still quite warm days (today is a case in point) the thermostat would turn the heating on in the early morning quite unnecessarily. The living room has reached 21C without the need for it. It's been a very pleasant day with outdoor tomatoes still ripening after I had virtually given up on them.

In North Yorks this weekend, and today has been superb - sunny and very mild (high teens). Forecast is for this to continue, and I do hope that's right.

NB Supermoon Sunday! (well, Monday morning)....

"Weather permitting, the large red moon will be visible across the whole of Britain from 1.10am BST on Monday morning. At that moment, the Earth’s shadow will start to creep across the face of the full moon, causing it to dim and take on a yellowish hue. At 3.10am BST, the moon will be fully in Earth’s shadow, and for an hour and 12 minutes will turn a dark rusty red, or grey depending on surface conditions. The whole spectacle will be over by 6.25am BST Monday."
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
