Nina Ridge - ex BBC1 Weather presenter shock!

I see from next week's RT that Nina Ridge (of high pressure fame) left the BBC at the end of August to return to teaching, thus depriving me of another source of weather-based puns! Will Neil Sleet now be transferred?

Last evening's hour-long torrential downpour here produced a flooded back drive, and... wait for it!... ONE tame little rumble of thunder. After spectacular cumulonimbus clouds had earlier put on a spectacular sunset-combined show, it was such a disappointment.

Today's cloudy high of 15 degrees C amounts to the normal for... mid-October. (Or early May, if preferred).

Chilly, not hanging about, but largely dry NW/N winds here. Grey. Nordic.

Too early to put the heating on, though - unafjordable!

Freezing for early September feels like late October

This p.m., arguably the best summer day for weeks! Gentle breeze, fantastic, crystal clear visibility for many miles on the tops, good but not grilling sun, ideal for upcountry walking.

And it's expected to make its way down here by Sunday!

The weather vein is rather weak on here, at the moment! :)

A trifle windy here today but nevertheless very pleasantly warm in the sun. Yesterday was better still as it was much calmer without the wind.

A lovely day in the Pennines today - a little chilly, but warmer than it has been for a couple of weeks, and all-day sunshine. The morning walk was very welcome, and most of the afternoon could be devoted to the garden. The smell of Autumn in the air today - which I suppose is only to be expected - but following on from the coldest, bleakest Summer I can remember, today promises a gentler Autumn.

It has been a lovely weekend in these parts. It's been dry, sunny, and - today in particular - warm, at around 20° C.

Not same temp, but equally lovely, and crystal clear outlines of the high fells against the sinking sun. Blissful weekend.

Temperatures dropped to 6 degrees here last night, pretty cold for this early on a London night. However, they made it up to + 16 in this afternoon's sunshine - very pleasant for a visit to the Herne Hill Sunday market, which I hadn't heard about previously, despite living only 2 miles away for the past 10 years! Great stalls - delicious homemade cakes and savouries, and numerous stalls selling amazing ranges of cheeses. Well worth the 10 minutes train ride from Victoria if you're up here & not sure what to do on Sundays before 4 pm. I got home to find my near neighbour surrounded by some 20 attractive young women sitting in a circle on our lawn. I said, "How do you get to meet so many women, J---?" "Shh", he said in almost a whisper, "It's my partner's post-natal group - I'm not supposed to be out here". He was opening a bottle of wine.
