It were raining cats and dogs at lunchtime yesterday! Goodness! And the wind as well!

Talk of a heatwave next weekend. Any truth in this, S-A? I've lost count of just how many years a heatwave begins and the summer really takes off on my birthday (next Friday). It happened in both 1975 and 1976 and did so again last year as well as several in between.

Despite the sun being out this morning, there is a chill wind really pushing those temperatures down and my fingers went numb with cold.

Heatwave may turn out a bit of an exaggeration Pet, but from the looks of it we could be in for a dozen or so days of good warm weather right across the country. And we will be thoroughly deserving of it, if this coming Tuesday's and Wednesday's weather charts are to be believed, resembling the worst of what midwinter throws at us with gales and heavy rain. But you're correct about 1975 - with a lengthy heatwave following on from snow falling down to sea levels in many parts of the north at the beginning of June that year.

After what we've had so far that counts as a heatwave in my book .

Well I'm supposing it's not supposed to be a heatwave; but just supposing it is, Thursday is supposed to be a good starting date, supposedly speaking!

Hmmm not a good sentence that, I must admit!

Supposed to be raining today but we have sunny intervals!(it may later, I think?)

Is it just me, or have wind speeds across UK been trending upwards? The last winter / spring and now, there seems to be never ending drive.
It is June 1st, yet outside oop 'ere in Ultima Thule, pretty damned chilly.

Quite right, Draco. There seems to be a trend this way. Climate change?

I feel sorry for my tomato plants which have been out for two weeks and are subject to constant wind buffeting and lower than expected temperatures. I have staked them already although they are only about 9 inches high.

Incidentally, I had a tasty pint the other day from a new brewery. Its name is pleasingly appropriate to our ongoing thread. These are good times for ale drinkers with new brews sprouting up all over the place.

20.00 hrs in Ultima Thule on the first day of summer, and it is one of the fiercest wind and rain storms we have had this year, shovelling it down and wind that has torn clematis with its trellis off walls, and hurled rubbish bins yards down the road. Amazing. Wind 35 mph plus and predicted to rise.

It's pretty much the same in sunny Staffordshire! We have had strong to very strong winds here virtually every day of the year apart from that dry, warm spell just after Easter and that was for about three days only. Your previous posting about the wind is something I've been saying for some time now and surely cannot be right.

Temperatures today have struggled to get into double figures and the cold wind has lowered them further. This is the most lamentable June day I can remember in decades. The heating is on, the Berghaus worn and gloves and scarf wouldn't have gone amiss.

Oh dear, it's just started coming down in buckets again and crashing against the window making a fearful racket!

21.15hrs Rain / sleet like hurled gravel, winds the fiercest I have seen even up here in the fells in 20 years. Cannot see any of the hills so intense is the ferocity of the rain / wind. Crikey!

Last rain I remember like this was on the Amazon way up on the Peru/Ecuador/Brazil borders.

I've been there! Seriously! Rained like crazy too (well it is 'rain forest').

Don't expect that sort of thing in Merrie England on 1 June for goodness' sake!
