Cloudy, a stiff breeze and it's nowhere near warm enough here.

I've noticed some chaps optimistically going around wearing shorts but so far I'm not encouraged to join them. (13° here).

The population of West London offers up fervent thanks.

We are having a charity fund raising event at work on Wednesday in aid of skin cancer and staff are being 'encouraged' to go along in Hawaiian shirts and shorts. I've never had the former and not worn the latter since 1966 so they'll have to whistle in my case. Donated to the charity so as not to be a complete party pooper but...not for me, thanks.

I had shorts on when I met Harold Wilson round Christmas Day in the mid-Sixties, uninterestingly enough. I had acquired a Batcar and took it with me to church, where Mr Wilson and his wife chose to sit behind my five-year-old self and my parents. Unfortunately for the Prime Minister, I chose that moment to try out the car's pellet firing mechanism (excellent, btw) and he was the nearest available target (I was very young ..).

When my parents realised what was happening, my experimentations were abruptly curtailed and my life may have come very close to a tragically early conclusion. Harold however was very nice about it. He came up to us after the service and and told me how much he loved watching Batman every week, admired my car etc. I don't think there was any press or TV there, he just seemed to be quite genuinely nice.

Is there any end in sight for this damned wind? We've had day after day of it here and it was so cold today my fingers went numb, something that usually happens only in winter. The wind rarely gets mentioned adequately on forecasts and I think at one time the BBC intended removing the wind speed indicators but caved in after protests. It is a crucial element in the weather and is much more of an issue now than it ever used to be. There have probably been just two or three days so far this year up here where it's not been a howling gale.

Been not too bad weather down here these past few days. Going to be a good weekend as well.

I am off work at the moment, so have more time for family but I expect week after next going to be rather busy, or maybe not?

Reminds me of The Masterson Inheritance, the R4 improvised melodrama from over twenty years ago. Josie Lawrence made a comment "You can't gamble on the future!" to which Paul Merton began a riff (which had the audience - and Ms Lawrence - breathless with laughter): "What do you mean, 'You can't gamble on the future'? What else can you gamble on? 'I bet you King Harold loses at the Battle of Hastings'? You try going into Ladbrooks and offering a tenner on England winning the World Cup in 1966!" etc etc etc
