What a difference a day makes - this morning -1.5 and thick frost, then it seemed to be turning out ok, sunny, chilly wind but reasonably warm. Clouds moved in around lunchtime, spitty rain, temps only a miserable 8° now
How exciting - and what a lovely viaduct! I suppose Beeching was considered a good thing at the time, but now we can see how shortsighted it was .... hindsight is a wonderful thing of course.
Beeching did the job he was told to do by Tory Minister of Transport Ernest Marples. I am sure that it was purely coincidental that he had been MD of a company with interests in road building. Actually, his wiki entry makes interesting reading. Headings include "Conflict of Interest", "Use of Prostitutes", and "Flight to Monaco".
Still, he became a Peer of the Realm, so he's a Fine Example to us all.
(In the interests of fairness, I must add that the Waverley line closed when Labour was in charge.)

I keep looking in on this thread to see if there is anything from someone about my Inbox being aggravatingly 'Full' when they wanted to PM me … As it's on the Announcements forum I may just delete the whole thing or divert the recent messages to Platform 3 . Perhaps add them to Stormy Weather. It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
