His plan for the railways was certainly not universally considered to be a good thing. Many of us thought that he was asked the wrong question and came up with the wrong answer. His previous and subsequent record at ICI was, however, considered to be good. He was a distinguished old boy of the grammar school that I attended. He had a nephew in my year, and several boys in my form had fathers who had been at school with him. They were all highly embarrassed by his work for the railways.

As you say, not long now. I'm awaiting the result with bated breath.

What a difference a day makes - this morning -1.5 and thick frost, then it seemed to be turning out ok, sunny, chilly wind but reasonably warm. Clouds moved in around lunchtime, spitty rain, temps only a miserable 8° now

How exciting - and what a lovely viaduct! I suppose Beeching was considered a good thing at the time, but now we can see how shortsighted it was .... hindsight is a wonderful thing of course.
After a lovely weekend, on the whole, it got duller and duller, and it was snowing here a few minutes ago.

Beeching did the job he was told to do by Tory Minister of Transport Ernest Marples. I am sure that it was purely coincidental that he had been MD of a company with interests in road building. Actually, his wiki entry makes interesting reading. Headings include "Conflict of Interest", "Use of Prostitutes", and "Flight to Monaco".

Still, he became a Peer of the Realm, so he's a Fine Example to us all.

(In the interests of fairness, I must add that the Waverley line closed when Labour was in charge.)

Oh no Don, where were you? I just blew through Haute Normandie today! I write from the Pas de Calais, however!

We could have had a rendezvous!

Er, possibly; not quite what one has a right to expect of a Host, methinks...

A regular Spring trip of ours over many years - Five nights in Dieppe. Good weather yesterday for our steam train round the Baie de la Somme, and good forecast for today. Tomorrow back home via Calais-Dover. Perhaps a meeting next time!

Well a Host on Holiday is capable of anything, you know...

I keep looking in on this thread to see if there is anything from someone about my Inbox being aggravatingly 'Full' when they wanted to PM me … As it's on the Announcements forum I may just delete the whole thing or divert the recent messages to Platform 3 . Perhaps add them to Stormy Weather.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
