First frost of the winter here as well this morn - probably the last for a while as far as most of the country's concerned as winds go round to a vigourous westerly type.

World War Three came to a sudden halt at around 9 pm last night, as people went in from the cold and switched on The Apprentice, I would imagine!

Firstly, may I wish S_A the most happiest of birthdays today. Before I met him I knew nothing about the föhn effect or katabatic mists, so here's to many more years of him imparting his extensive meteorological knowledge!!

Ontopic, the last two mornings I had expected to wake to Jack Frost and his icy fingers but the clear and bright nights faded to cloud in the early hours. Yesterday and today a high of only 11° but temps dropping like a stone from around 3pm onwards. Horrid rain forecast here for next couple of days, I would rather have crisp, dry and cold.

Mixed day here, ending in downpours and cold. horrible.

and remember to loosen off your windscreen wipers on frosty mornings, before wiping.

Chucking it down in the centre of the capital... - hope the forecasters are right about it improving late morning.

Fingers crossed that you'll be ok from 11 is onwards, plus "a nice afternoon in prospect", according to the local weather on t'telly....

... and so it proved. The BBC local weather on the TV breakfast show is often remarkably accurate. It stopped raining about 10.40, and by 11 there was pale sunshine...

Lovely here, but it's going to be raining by mid-afternoon.

There are signs of a very cold winter being on the cards, according to Brummie Simon. I just hope they've got it wrong.
