Glad you're back and in one piece, Anna

We've had a lovely morning in S. Yorks. I went to cover the BBQ and discovered this:

    Youngest son admits his guilt!

    Pacta sunt servanda !!!

Decidedly cooler today at a meagre 14.5°

I've been puzzling over Petrushka's plea for a waterproof with a stable hood and fastenings. My Berghaus's zip (which also has press studs over the poppers) fastens right up to the chin then the part of the hood that lies on the shoulders wraps over to fasten with 3 velcro strips almost to under the nose if you wrap it tight and the front of the hood is wired - not even a severe hurricane with dislodge it. (Obviously I'd never wear it like that unless I got caught in a blizzard halfway up the mountain because it's not the most flattering look!! ) I don't know which model it is, but it's Gore-Tex with mesh linings, I think Richard T. is an all-weather type of guy, perhaps he's got a recommendation?

Ferney, I hate these early evenings too, you need to put some lights on timers then you don't ever have to come back to a dark house or go into a dark room.
Good to have you back, Anna. Your Berghaus must be a better one than mine because press studs and Velcro are far more ideal than the toggles I have to tolerate. It wasn't cheap and no way could it take the storm lashing we had last week. On the one hand, such events are rare but on the other, this is the season for them.

Aha! On checking I find my Berghaus's hood is an Asgard hood - which is helmet compatible for when I am mountaineering!! It wasn't cheap either, around the £200 mark I recall. I did buy last Winter a Regatta 3-in-1, that zips and velcros up to over the chin but the hood has toggles you interlink, (that was cheap - half price, normally £70)

Congratulations BBM! Do you mean your marriage has been like the weather - stormy?

Hi Anna, and a big from me too. I'm with you on Berghaus - my last did several Alpine/Pyrenean trails, and I've recently bought another (a "Long Cornice ll" jacket with integral hood much as you describe) for winter birdwatching at home. It is longer than most jackets these days, coming to below the hips. But for my last trip to the Pyrenees I did invest in a RAB waterproof jacket and overtrousers, and have a RAB quilted jacket. RAB are excellent, lightweight, and are still made in the UK as far as I know (as opposed to China). It depends very much what you do outdoors. My advice to Pet would be to get along to a specialist outdoor shop like Cotswold which have knowledgeable staff and go through the options. The best are expensive, be warned.

Some rain during the night here but the last couple of days have been lovely and sunny,a bit cooler today though.
                      Super dog walking weather.

Welcome back Anna - the boys have been fretting mightily over your absence

From the 3 days of silence on this thread can one assume everyone forgot to turn the heating on and in consequence has been cringeing under the bedclothes?

Brummie Simon is predicting temperatures back above normal (but not so far) on Friday, but with quite a lot of wind and rain over the weekend, and then remaining on the coldish side (compared with what we've been used to) for the remainder of the month, which seems rather a long time.

                            Well, to clarify.

The weather was rather wild, wet and windy! Not a good day all.

So cold this a.m. that the central heating was triggered as we dropped way below the thermostat setting*!! Monday @ 7.30 a.m. 10C, this morning in Ultima Thule 1C - just.

                              * system NOT officially turned on yet at all. We was suddenly woken by faint rumblings in the radiators!!

Perfect Bonfire Night weather here...unfortunately. Like being in a war zone for a couple of hours. I wonder how many of those people setting off fireworks know what it's all about? I have to admit I only knew the bare bones until I read Antonia Fraser's The Gunpowder Plot: Terror and Faith in 1605 just very recently and it's a real eye-opener and a rattling good read. I do urge everyone to read it.
