Sorry to be a party pooper, but these innuendoes are becoming a little tedious.

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

There appears to have been somewhat of a volte-face with broadly dry weather save for Thursday (perhaps).

Oh that's cheered me up, thanks Cali

Saturday still has the dreaded downpour symbol however

... can't trump mercia's wonderful circumzenithal arc at Bowood - but - the other day walking westwards on Hammersmith Mall there was an almost circular rainbow iridescence high in the sky some 15° south of the sun, at about 6.30pm. Much more visible with polarized sunglasses than with the naked eye. Don't know what it's called - might Serial know? - presumably light refracted by ice crystals in high cloud?

If the iridescence surrounded the sun (or moon for that matter) it would be a halo. I must admit I've never heard of a perfect circular iridescence apparently autonomous from any visible refactory source, though a rainbow reflected in a lake would be one such example.

I saw the most amazing whole-circle 'standard' rainbow, of all places on/in the Sea of Galilee - driving down the winding road from the north towards Capernaum amid showers, the sun came out as we approached and started to have a view of the lake, and the rainbow 'standing' end to end on its surface was perfectly reflected in the still waters...

It was back in the days of roll-film, needless to say many photos were taken (at some risk on the roadside) - don't think I ever got them digitalised

                            Particularly good one here: http://epod.usra.edu/blog/2010/10/ci...alifornia.html

                            And there's more celestial jauntiness:

Some good explanations appended to those pics.

Returning to the theme of this thread, I was impressed by this recent photo circulated by NASA, of a storm over Great Salt Lake, Utah
