Good flight to miss m. I hope she arrives safely via Frankfurt or Amsterdam! Actually Schiphoel (spelling?) is one of our favorites because one can buy anything there in the duty free...chocolate to diamonds. Which airline is miss m. flying?

Thank you. 22 balmy indeed. I gather miss m hopes to return via Frankfurt and Amsterdam, and expects to leave JFK in about 90 mins.
As I recall from living in a snowy region 22F was OK. Between -5 to -10 C was OK, below that it got a bit "fresh". Depended on wind and whether anything (rain, snow etc.) was coming down at the time. +2 to -5 was dodgy, as snow could melt, and then refreeze, which was a real pain and hazardous. I did once walk to work at around -20 C.

Just taken Isla for walk - possibly coldest day so far this winter, but pavements not slippery. Dry and sunny at present, but I believe we have some rain later.

Singapore airlines to Frankfurt (now landed, apparently), KLM to Schiphol, then KLM to Edinburgh. Should have been United Newark to Glasgow, but the best United could offer was a flight on Tuesday. Oh, and their luggage is lost somewhere in the system, and presumably will turn up in due course. She'd need to be a cockeyed optimist.... (see above)

I haven't flown for years. Can more seasoned travellers tell me if this is common? These problems have been caused by weather, and mechanical problems; their outbound flight was delayed by 24 hours.

So glad to hear that Miss M. will soon be safely returned to the bosom of her family! I suspect you'll have to collect at Edinburgh (actually, I agree with marthe, Schiphol is a very nice terminal and I imagine she'll buy you something whisky based in duty-free) Years back I used to use the KLM city hopper - Cardiff to Amsterdam - (not sure if it still operates) was always impressed by their tasty snacks. Cannot help with query re lost luggage, I guess I've just been lucky and only had one delay due to weather which was an internal flight from Istanbul in February where we sat on the tarmac whilst the plane was constantly sprayed with de-icer. Until then I hadn't known it snowed in Istanbul! However, it was ok as I teamed up with the citrus buyer from Sainsburys who was off to inspect the crops.

Oops, ontopic. Frosty after clear night, just started to spit with rain, not too cold.

Thank you, Anna. Yes, I shall be leaving in an hour or so for Edinburgh. We'll return via Glasgow Airport (aka the scenic route) so that two of the party can collect their car - they all flew out from Glasgow.

OT: Windscreen scraping was required here this morning, but it is now raining, and a chill 3ÂşC.

Aha, and here am I with my fake Ugg Boots in leopard skin on (mocked by S_A as being just too, too, totally Chavvy and beyond the pale) ... well, my tootsies are well and truly cosy!!

mangeton, you know that's what Dads are for - a taxi service around the scenic routes? Drive safely!

mangerton, I hope all have arrived safely and have collected their cars, suitcases etc and are now enjoying home comforts. Good old Dad's taxi, as we called it. My father was ever the willing chauffer as I'm sure you are.

Anna, let's hear it for Uggs. Fake Uggs (though made of real sheepskin) have been just the thing for cold New England winters. Mine are not nearly as exciting being plain brown, not leopard skin! Uggs were quite a fad on campus for a number of years. Tall leather boots seem to have taken over as the footwear of choice at local schools. I believe Uggs started out in Australia as warm winter footwear for surfers. The real Uggs are quite expensive. Years ago there was a small shop in Newport called Land of Ahhs, run by a musician from NZ, that sold all manner of sheepskin gear, baby blankets etc. I still have a pair of sheepskin mittens from Hamish's shop.

Weather has turned damp, drizzly, dreary. Just the afternoon to go to the movies.

Big swirling winds in Ultima Thule, and temp dropping like a stone.
Snow overnight on tops. Feels like maybe more incoming.

A respite from the rather depressing weather we have had of late. Tomorrow I think, back to normal. First day of term as well!!

And how about your mum's angina?

Thanks marthe and Anna for your good wishes. All now safely gathered in and returned home after a 200 mile round trip. Luggage still to be accounted for.

marthe, I'm sure you'll be pleased to hear that - transport problems aside - all were unanimous in their praise of a most enjoyable break in NY, NY.
