Over the last week or so, we've had strong winds, but not structurally-damaging winds. The notable thing has been the fairly frequent hail showers, especially last Tuesday. Also thrown in was a single flash of lightning and rumble of thunder. Then it cleared up and the sun came out as if nothing had happened. Strange weather.

Here we'd call that bl**dy ffffreezing - and in Alaska a winter heatwave! What a lovely illustration of how our respective climates and associated expectations differ!

It didn’t calm down until around 4pm.

Today looks like being mixed, it’s not yet got to 4°. Brummie Simon is predicting further unsettled weather and then around the 10th we go into a cold spell – but not the depths of Winter - and this continues until the 25th with ice, sleet and possible snow showers – which doesn’t sound too bad to me as it gets us one month closer to Spring without anything major occurring.

S_A, sorry to hear of your computer woes, perhaps you could offer a bed to your roofless computer geek in return for him applying his sonic screwdriver to your machine? (And well done to BBM for proving there was room at the Inn!)
Thanks Anna! He's just been here, en route back to his roofless flock of blats, and discovered my problem to be due to a loose card inside the machine.

I don't expect we'll be getting quite the same severities in the weather down here in the south as we had last week for a while, but it is indicative of climate change that even normal westerly-type winter now seems to make intense low pressure systems the norm rather than the exception, as I can say it always was in my 40 years' worth of amateur observation until this last decade or so. It was being said that we have to endure such weather for the remainder of the month, but if Simon's right, a cold spell will ease up on wind strengths for a while.

Wind is kicking in right now. I only hope it doesn't get too wild. Temps are going down into the teens F tonight. Snow is predicted for the end of the week. Should be interesting as west to east moving system meets up with an Atlantic system.

Bump! I like that. I'll keep you all posted about Thursday into Friday's "bump". At the moment, the sun is shining but the air is cool and calm.

Lordy what a terrible end of 2013 and the start of 2014 here in NW2. Very wet, windy and daaaaark.

I keep telling myself we're hurtling towards Spring but ... it's not cheering me up

I'm waiting to take some post-Festive season detritus to the communal bins - it's only a short dash outside and baxk - but I'm not going out in this

Can you not turn the woofers out in the garden for a quick one, Rob?

We've done two walkies with the dog today. Quite pleasant, but no sun - but no rain or wind either - and neither have we had these things compared to much of the UK. I expect our turn will come eventually! Being this far north, we don't get much light, and what should count as light from 9.30am to 3.30pm is just murky gloom. Roll on the summer.

The one day for getting out and enjoying the fresh air this week, is tomorrow.
