A landslip in Monmouthshire is to be assessed by specialist surveyors as the clear-up continues in the aftermath of a "major Atlantic storm".

From the look of things, the main body of strong winds will hit the SE between 2 and 8 am - preceded, just to fool everybody, by a temporary lull at around 11 pm. So Wales and the SW will be roughly 2 to 3 hours ahead of us. Strangely enough, winds have noticeably lessened here from the earlier force 5/6, in the past hour. One of our tenants, who must be away, has forgotten about the 10 potted plants on his balcony; having just now placed all mine in the shelter of our basement area, one wishes people would just think ahead a bit more Another tenant has just suggested filling all 12 wheelie bins with builders' rubble from a bathroom makeover he's currently carrying out, to prevent them from blowing over! He asked me if I thought it likely that the storm will be as bad as they're predicting; I answered that following Mike Fish's disastrous underestimation of the '87 storm, they have to be on the safe side for the sake of their reputation, and would therefore be more likely to exaggerate, warning people not to go out, etc etc.

A church service marks the centenary of a massive storm which damaged a thousand homes and left three people dead.

There have been squally showers here and windy, gusting at 37mph. Not too warm at 13.3° either
