We're 'doing' Spanish wines at a fun tasting (we swallow!) so I'm doing a chicken thigh, chorizo, paprika, garlic, onions, butterbeans, black olives and tomato casseroley-type thing.

I was thinking of providing orange segments too, either for people to squeeze OJ into their sauce or to have like a half-time refresher. Any thoughts?

Should I do bulgar wheat or provide a couple of french sticks?

Not sure about the orange segments Ams, if squeezed into the casserole then that's ok but if people eat or suck on them and then have a glug of wine .... disaster on the palate
Well, I like bulgar wheat (it's loads better than couscous), soaks up the juices but on the other hand, with a French stick you can squish down onto it the butter beans and bung it in the tomatoey garlicky juices to make it all softly delicious .... Oh, it'll be perfectly yumptious!

I once tried orange juice ice cubes - they could be served up as an orange-flavoured dish between courses, to re-whet appetites, in the manner of water ice - (damn, can't remember the correct name for water ice! )

Sorbet? If it's stirred whilst freezing then it's a granita. I like inter-course sorbets!

I assume my invite is still in the post then .....
I had a funny exchange this morning. I did my usual 8am trip to the market fruit & veg stall He always sells his bunches of 5 bananas for 50p (no cheaper than the supermarkets but they are always very flavoursome and just the right degree of ripeness, but being Fyffes are a bit suss when it comes to FairTrade I guess)
I didn’t think he had any this week as there was just a bag of the loose ones that become detached from the bunches, so I purchased other items, was just leaving and then I saw him take another box of bananas off the van. Oh, says I, I didn’t think you had any more bananas. He pointed at the bag and said ‘they’re 50p’ But I don’t want that many I replied, ‘well I’m not selling less than 50 pees worth’, No I just want a smaller amount for 50p ‘Well you can’t. You can have those, it’ll be better for you as there’s more of them’
Look, says I, I’m not arguing over the price or trying to get something cheap. ‘I know you’re not’ he replied ‘you spend a lot of money with me, but are you taking them bananas or not?
So I took them. Eight bananas for 50p. I’d eaten two of them before 10am !!

Tbh I had never heard of the word "granita" until you and Anna mentioned it just now, Ams! My idea stems back to my teenage years when, one day it occurred to me that one should be able to make iced lollies without the stick to hold by pouring diluted orange squash into ice cube moulds and sticking them in the fridge. This was way before I'd heard of sorbet; and it proved remarkably successful - my mum insisting on having a couple of iced orange cubes in her pre-lunch Sunday gin!

What a strange market salesman - reminds me of the one in "The Life of Brian": "No, you don't just buy the stuff for what I'm asking for it, you're supposed to barter!"

I used tohave a lolly mould, a plastic one sided lolly thing and you were even provided with little sticks. You just filled it with juice etc and froze it.
