Oh, a sweet little Teddy, but I think Guernseys are different from Jerseys, something to do with the knit .... (where have all the men got to to advise?) I too have a teddy, he's cross-eyed with a beer belly, impossibly long legs and huge feet and sports a tartan bow tie, really scruffy .... but I love him to death, wouldn't be without him. I think everyone has a Teddy, even if they hide him away.
Sweaters may be non-U but they are certainly American. Jumpers are an entirely different sort of garment over here and worn only by women. An American jumper is a sleeveless dress usually worn with a blouse underneath. When living in the green and pleasant, I very quickly learnt to refer to my "sweaters" as "jumpers." Sweaters/jumpers can also be pull-overs, cardigans (cardies), jerseys, etc. Shetland sweaters and Fair Isles have been popular over here; also Irish Fisherman's Sweaters and Icelandic Sweaters. We've found a UK-based mail order co. called Woolovers that sells nice jumpers, including Guernsey pullovers. At the moment, anything resembling the fashions of the 1960s is very popular. Now, if I'd only saved the things I wore as a teenager... ! The weather, by the way, has been delightful here today. Yesterday was a washout but today has been sunny, breezy, with temps around 22C.

Cashmere? Poor person's vicuña is that! But I do hope that your gutters stop dripping and that you get a decent night's sleep over there in Powystan!

Cats that sleep on beds make the best teddy bears. I have heard tell of cashmere teddies though...(I go to bed in a silk teddy and cuddle the cat.)

The BBC forecast for yesterday (a day full of heavy rain & thunder storms) was way out. We had a few spots of rain before dark but we had a fair bit thereafter but of the steady rather than the deluge variety and the occasional drum roll of thunder & flash of lightning.

Today is meant to be cloudy & sunny and dry until after dark ... we'll see

It'd make a good name for a beer, though, wouldn't it? Theakston's Thunderclap?

No beer here -wouldn't mind a Pimms no 1 and a nice big terrace to sit and drink it.

                      Do people still have Pimms'?

On topic -blustery, still muggy but, as ams says, we also had a clap of thunder, a little rain, that was that.

Where is S_A . His weather forecasts are needed. Hope all is well there S_A.

Definitely. You can now find it pre-mixed in small cans, often on offer in the supermarkets: e.g. http://www.tesco.com/groceries/Produ.../?id=264089830

Just chuck in some bits of cucumber and mint and a sliced strawberry and then stick some opera on, lie back and think of Glyndebourne!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I wonder if S_A has got internet problems again? He's not been around since the 26th.

Comparing the BBC and Met forecasts, they both agree about showers developing but the BBC says we are to have thunder and lightning from 6pm as against the 1pm forecast by the Met. It's a mix of sun and cloud here, breezy, 20° so not cold enough for a jersey/jumper/sweater!

(My rather old Oxford dictionary defines a jersey as being close fitting; a jumper loose fitting and reaching the hips; a sweater is worn after exercise to avoid chills. We didn't mention pullovers did we? To me they have to have a V neck to qualify. Is there a word for sleeveless knitted tops - I know they became known as tank-tops but in old photos all small boys wear them, so what were they called then?)

Thanks Anna, my flip comment yesterday intended no insult to your teddy's looks, or indeed your men friends.

                            Character is what counts most

We wore 'tank tops' or sleeveless waistcoats with a blouse and skirt - trousers not allowed in the office.

No jeans or hipsters until about the late 60s. I see another topic arising.......

Enid Blyton () always referred to them as "sleeveless jerseys".
