Saly, I think you said you have relatives who sometimes get shopping for you? Ask them to buy a tray of living leaf salad from the supermarket (all chains sell them inc. the Co-Op, at £1) They're mixed baby salad leaves, green and red, rooted in compost, just keep them in the kitchen and snip off what you need. A tray will last you quite a while if you're just using them as a side dish/sandwich filler (remember to water them)
Or, although I imagine you don't want to mess around with compost, I grow them using mixed leaf seeds in containers on the windowledge, you can sow and harvest right the way through from May to September, they take about 3 weeks from sowing to picking stage.
On-topic, taking a long time to clear up and warm up here, 14° now but still very windy.

I must investigate delivered veg boxes but believe they are very expensive.
A tired iceberg can be resurrected by your chopping off its bottom (where the stalk was) and taking off the leaves that you want to eat and putting them in a bowl of cold water in the fridge for a while (say an hour?!). They'll crisp up nicely more often than not.

No I've finished with trying to grow things on window ledges Anna but the supermarket trays sound a goodidea. I'll ask them when I see cozes this week.

On topic too. very windy and chilly here. Just beenlistening to a CD of Sibelius sym 1 on the computer. Sound surprisingly good. Off topic again within one minute. Sorry

Have to say I'll check next time I shop, not having noticed these before - habitual time-saving patterns of looking for what one assumes will be where it always was play a big part in my regime - but they sound a very good idea, Anna!

North Sea cloud as far west as where you are, Anna; I'm surprised to hear that. Same weather here - sun not yet broken through the stratocumulus "roller cloud", temperature a miserable 14.5 C. At least the wind should dry my laundry!

Sounds like a useful tip, ams; being as I am a single person family ("all together now: aaaah") I tend to make do with one Iceberg lettuce lasting me through from Saturday to Thursday during summer, being as the original chop-off point is where the outside leaves tend to brown earliest.

The are tending to be rather on the small size this year, them Icebergs...

I too am of the single variety, S_A and the problems it can bring in this family-orientated day and age - sheesh. I prefer to ring the changes with a three- or four-pack of Little Gems which also crisp up again in cold water. Go to have your five-a-day, innit

The lonely little iceberg in the local shop was already half black and rotting so at £1. seemed something to avoid.

Cozes may find something at S'sbury but I prefer my Co-op when I can walk to it. Not at the moment though

They're usually in the loose lettuce (not bagged lettuce) section where it joins other salady stuff. Also, you can buy living heads. I have one at the moment, three different types of curly lettuce (two green one red) with their roots. I make a slit in the bottom of the bag and put base in mug or bowl of water (in shady area which gets no sun although I think you are supposed to keep them in the fridge), snip off what you need, they are quite large so good value. I got mine from Asda, on offer £1. Brightens up the kitchen as it looks rather like an attractive pot plant

The cloud cleared, but took its time, just fluffy white ones now. I wish the wind would drop. Have put bean plants outside near the wall but don't want to plant them out and get them battered and torn plus soil drying out too quickly. I think we are due some rain late Tuesday into Wednesday but still warm with winds easing?

Yep - "some" rain likely (probably more for you than us) with winds turning around to our more customary SW-erlies, meaning moister air on the say, and goodbye (at last!) to that raw-feeling NE-er, lettuce spray.

Thanks for the supplementary good ideas Anna!
