Very gloomily I have to say any milder breakthrough now looks unlikely for the forseeable.

Well I can report that the sun has been coming and going for the last couple of hours .... and although a slight rise in temperature, but taking into account the strong winds, it's -2 at the moment, however, even those brief glimpses of sun made everyone feel a little more cheerful. The Met Office evidently are predicting a heatwave "at the end of Spring" Seeing as Spring hasn't started yet I guess we have a long wait!
I don't usually watch Country File so thanks for heads-up S_A, I'll catch it later in the week (I confess I was watching the double length Coronation Street!)

I've just watched Country File Anna, and although it visited several areas, the part in the Black Mountains and roundabout looked lovely, but surely filmed last year in better weather. Only the last bit, star gazing, looked like this awful Spring.

A brief shaft of sunshine has just managed to penetrate the stratocumulus monotony/monopoly of the past 4 days, bringing the temperature up to 1.5 C. All but a few lingering vestiges of snow now melted here - it's going to take longer on Arran. Don't we have a poster living up in them parts?

Yes, a few days ago alycidon posted he was in the far North of Scotland but didn't specify where. Parts of N. Wales still cut off. (No sign of mangerton lately, hope he's not fallen in a snowdrift!) When I left home this morning it was 0.0 and all agreed the wind had got even more bitter, however it's died away completely and it's finally crept up to same temperature as you, bit brighter but infrequent shafts of sunlight. The Black Mountains were still very white this morning but locally nearly all gone on the hills. Just been distracted by two buzzards flying around quite low searching for prey, normally just see them circling high on thermals.

Arran is still a long way short of the far north of Scotland - more like 250 miles south of it, and that's only counting the mainland. Including the Northern Isles, it's more like 450!

IIRC Alycidon is/was somewhere near Inverness, possibly the Drumnadrochit area - though I may be getting mixed up with another poster from the long dead R3 boards.

There's not much snow further north(ish) at the moment, e.g. on the mainland adjacent to Skye. I gather it's been nice and sunny (if cold) recently! AIUI that's a likely outcome when the jetstream has moved so far south at this time of year.
