Very cold (max -0.5) today and with a light covering of snow all day (about 1/3 of a centimetre).
Stormy Weather

Originally posted by mangerton View PostWell, I got here without any undue trouble. Sorry to hear about all the snow and cold elsewhere, especially Jersey. I passed through a few very light flurries, but that apart it's been bright sunshine. There was a beautiful sunset, and the skies are clear, so I'm hopeful of seeing some stars and possibly L4 Pan-Starrs later.
The only drawback is the temperature. The warmest it's been today is 1 deg C, so it'll be damn cold tonight!
Nice...
20-20 cloud cover here
I was supposed to be going to dinner in the countryside just north of the M25 last night, with the prospect of some dark sky in sort-of-countryside (though not a patch on Galloway ) but it was cancelled.
We shall rely on your reports, mangerton"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Well, I went out, and drove to a dark place. I'm actually staying at Isle of Whithorn, which is about 30 miles south of the Galloway Forest Park, but it's very dark here - so dark in fact that it's quite confusing!
We all know, I suppose, the major constellations like Orion, Gemini, Ursa Major and Cassiopeia. Tonight I saw all these, and thousands more besides, including the Milky Way. It's been several years since I've seen so many stars; that is one of the disadvantages of being a city dweller.
My ipad has an app - Night Sky - which uses GPS. You point the ipad at the sky and it tells you what you're looking at. Quite remarkable.
What I did not see was the comet. I had a look at the NASA website before I went out, and at the moment it's most easily seen just after sunset. I'll try tomorrow, weather permitting.

Don't mind me, I am only kidding and envious of your experience. I shall now retire to bed and dream of comets

It's not exactly a train-spotterly approach is it, which consists of a little notebook and an HB pencil tucked in the pocket of your duffel coat? Or, going up a gear, venturing out there having studied the Brian Cox guide to stardom? All hair and teeth and a bloody know-it-all

I did the train spotting thing with my duffel coat and Ian Allan book all those years ago....
On topic, the temp reached the giddy heights of 8 deg today. The down side to this is that the skies at the moment are cloud capp'd.*
*And presumably the towers also. Caliban will know.
