The forecast for the Pennines was snow from 9:00am - and it started at 8:57, which I thought was impressive timing! It's as much sleet as anything, and the ground is still so warm that it's all melting anyway. Might as well be rain.

I emailed Marthe, also cousins in CosCob,Conn.USA butnothing from either. Power may be off. My other worryis S_A - his last message atthe end of January said he was going out that evening..... I've emailed himtoo,some days ago. Weusd to be in email contact a couple ofyears ago. Just hope everyone is okay.

marthe checking in again. Power is indeed back on as saly notes in the previous post. Our power was restored yesterday evening after going out about 24 hours before. We spent yesterday shoveling out the car, walkways, the pavement in front of the house etc. We have about 2 to 2 1/2 feet of heavy, crusty snow on the ground. Now I'm paying for that exertion by having pains in my leg again. We were so bundled up in layers of clothing yesterday that we looked like two mummies waddling about the house. The house was really frigid until the heat came back on. I suppose this is a sad commentary on how badly I would have fared in the days when the house was built (mid 1700s). My heroes are the National Grid line workers who were out in the frigid cold and wind working to restore power as quickly as possible. Fingers crossed for saly's relatives in Connecticut, and Anna's as well. Trees are also weighted down with a covering of icy snow. Warmer weather this coming week will melt some of this.

Same here! Galad everything is alright over there Marthe! We moan about our weather!

I think we are quite lucky, usually but there are, I know, parts of the UK, that have suffered quite badly as well.

White stuff here, just an inch or so, covering the rooftops and ground. Leaden sky too. I'm waiting for a phone call re my folks in CosCob. The three kids will love it as they will be off school.

We have snow and it was'nt forecastred! Not too much, rather light and may disappear later.

Thanks for that saly, it could be that S_A has had complete computer meltdown, or perhaps he's just decided, as people often do, to give the internet a miss for a while. If he is looking in, all good wishes to him.

marthe, I was surprised you said the house was frigid, with your three fireplaces and logs piled up I had assumed you would be toasty warm even if the power went off?

It's not managed to rise above 3.8° today and a nasty, raw, bone penetrating feel to the cold. My sister in Co. Durham is now into her third month of snow and is so fed up plus the forecast that the cold will last until mid-March she's booked a weeks holiday in Tenerife at the beginning of March ... alright for some. I'd love a week of warmth and not have to muffle up and look like the Michelin Man. I seem to be hibernating in the evenings with a book (now onto my third Ian Rankin/Rebus )

Yesterday was gloriously sunny. Today it's grey and sleety. Anna, the fireplaces did heat things up for a while but the upstairs bedrooms were indeed frigid. Our house is old and cold and not very "tight." There are many places through which cold air can come through. Here's hoping the warmer weather we're supposed to get starting Tuesday melts our snow and makes its way across the Atlantic to warm things up for all of you.

I've had a phone call from father of the coz in Conn. They were luckier than you marthe and didn't lose power at all.

Your poor sister Anna, well not so bad as she can get away for a bit.

I haven't been out today,hope to totter to little local shops tomorrow if the ice has gone. My garden is still full of snow, criss-crossed with fox footprints. I hope that baby recovers well.

Quite a mild day (4° ish) and dry here in Dundee. There was snow on the Sidlaws this morning, and the hills looked lovely in the sunshine. Sorry to hear about all the inclement weather elsewhere.

Glad to know that all is well in Cos Cob, though some parts of Connecticut were very hard hit. Sun and above-freezing temps are helping the snow to melt where it needs to. The side streets here are still in tough shape.

that. Apparently Cos Cob is some way from the worst ofthe weather.

I hope your streets soon clear. Most of the snow gone from SE London/Kent but a biting wind as I crossed the open space [park is too grand!] to the little shops.

Perhaps we could do with a 'gardens to visit' thread to make us look ahead to Spring.
