Temps reached -13C here last night and have not got close to being above freezing all day.

Well while they're at it I hope they include Greenwich/Blackheath, where they make life hell sometimes in summer -- and we already suffer as being directly under the incoming flight path to Heathrow. Helicopters are much worse for noise than jets, IMO. I suspect some of them are tourist flights over our 'World Heritage Site' (ha!)

I think it must have been pretty foggy in some parts earlier on, because a friend flying in from Frankfurt phoned to say that flights to London City had been cancelled unti late afternoon -- presumably because the corresponding morning flights from London to Frankfurt had been cancelled.

Most helicopters flying or hovering for lengthy periods over this area are police ones, often using powerful downward-directed searchlights, searching out escapees or fugitives from various crimes using the surrounding parks and woods for concealment. I just hope suspects don't come banging on my door demanding sanctuary!

I'm getting increasingly concerned about the forecast for Friday, having seen Brummie Simon's latest forecast and the Met Office projection plus the fact I am in an Amber Warning area for snow to start 3am Friday morning with strong winds and blizzarding. Possible depth of snow varies but it seems it could certainly be 10-15cm but possibly 25cm. The promised rain on Saturday seems to have been replaced by freezing fog, so on the basis that the depth of snow (if it is that deep) ain't going to go nowhere fast without some hefty rain - I'm just ordering an online shop to be delivered tomorrow evening .... no, not panic buying, just being sensible. I have been snowed in before, longest was 4 days, so I thought it better to be safe than sorry and have to exist on a packet of cream crackers and a tin of sardines!
It only got to half a degree above freezing today and is now -0.7° Draco, coldest ever recorded here since records began in 1929 was -13.7°, do you live on top of a mountain?

Yes, we're supposed to be going to Cardiff from the wild west on Friday for St David's Hall concert, but I don't fancy the M4 in those conditions....

Richard, I know since the Met Office got it wrong on so many occasions (i.e. BBQ Summer, Mild Winter, etc) they have to big it up but it's not looking good (at the moment) but presumably you have hotel room booked, so you could have a nice long (very long) weekend in Cardiff! And we'll see you a week next Wednesday!

Best to assume the worst to be on the safe side on this occasion I'm afraid, Anna.

Btw are you sure - 13 C is your lowest-ever temperature? I well remember - 20 C in Bristol on 1981 or 1982, it was reported that temperatures further to the west were even lower than that.

Yes, how are things in the Pit Heaps anton ? Very cold here today but non of the white stuff. It's saving it up for Friday here when a relative is driving from Hampshire.

The forecast seems to change every time I look at it.

Off topic -I see a relative of yours, Thomas Gould [vln],is playing in the concert tonight. You must be a very proud man

No, we normally aim to be home in Little England Beyond Wales by midnight, unless it's Mahler of course! (eat before concert, at Gios in the Hayes )

er S_A and any other weather sages ... scheduled to go to London from Rutland [vis Peterborough] on Friday by rail ... we are going to see sprog play in the chamber reduction of Mahler 4 so want very much to go .... but the forecast is rather doomsday and a weekend stranded in London is not at all desirable ...

-4º in London at the moment, it seems....
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Silly me! I was fooled by the report that it would be sunny in the South East. So it is, but the worst frost for days - bird bath, my usual guide, solid and looks to stay that way.

As I have the heating on at 70f, day and n ight for health reasons, I shall have a shock when the joint gas/electric bill comes. Never mind, keeping warm is my luxury. Keep warm and if you cycle, be careful.
