And yet my music student friend and I still struggled up to a freezing RAH rehearsal om most Sunday mornings as we had a pass from Sargent and LSO gave concerts at 3pm most weeks. I heard a lot of the basic repertoire live for the first time that way but brrr that hall was cold at 9.30am that winter. Much stamping about and hand exercises from the orchestra too. Thanks mercia, that looks interesting, will make a note to watch.
When I got up at 6am this morning (!) it was such a clear sky and the stars were burning bright. Not much of a frost but black ice. The Black Mountains were truly white and another lovely sunny day rising to 6°, dropping back sharply now to under 3° Not sure is we have any here from Norfolk but it seems they had total white-out for a while today in some parts and that's about it for expected snowfall but worrying forecast for Wales Friday with projected high accumulations. A friend's primroses are out and I noticed today some catkins and snowdrops so Spring will soon be here.
Report in the papers that supermarkets seeing a surge of buying of root vegs, braising steak, stewing lamb and sausages as we all settle down to warming, filling, meals Yumptious!

Temperature maxed at 2 C here this afternoon - I noticed a few flakes of snow on the way back that weren't forecast this far west. Weeds grew plentifully while temperatures were above the crucial 8 C last week; the lawn is a thick, rich green, but, as yet, no sign whatsoever spring bulbs popping boldly into view, let alone flowering, in the neck of the woods. Brummie Simon predicts a partial breaking of the cold spell hitting SW Wales, Cornwall and Devon on Friday and Saturday, but as yet is not prepared to commit beyond then. Even the milder air trying to roll in from the west is not really mild for the time of year; tentatively he's saying it could remain on the cold side into February.

Didn't realise all that about Baxter, Anna.

And, it is truly delicious and ... and, I wish I hadn't said anything! And, besides, you eat sardines, so, take a bit of fish here, take a bit of pig there, and call yourself a Demi-Veg, Schemi-Veg? Oy Vey!
Lovely sunny day today but quite cold and rather windy early on!Don’t cry for me

Earlier mistiness has now lifted into amorphous stratus, just about being penetrated by the sun - -1 C, no wind to speak of.
Comment was made earlier about misty conditions allegedly prevailing at the site of the Vauxhall helicopted crash at 8 this morning. Watching a newsflash an hour ago that showed YouTube footage taken at the scene, and presumably CCTV from a high building near the gyratory showing the road still on fire, I have to say the visibility appeared pretty clear to me. An air traffic expert in Dundee was brought on, saying that the majority of commercial helicopter flights, of which this appeared to be one, pass up the course of the River Thames, so as to avoid noise complaints - in which case the pilot, who we learn perished, would have been somewhat off course. Someone else was saying that a ban on 'copters flying across central London might have to be considered - which would make sense, in view of the profusion of tall cranes visible from up here on a clearer day.

They also land occasionally in our little green space across the road from me and kids get a great thrill when this happens. It is usually to pick up an injured person from an ambulance and fly them to a suitable hospital.
