Or the best way to predict tomorrow's weather is to assume it will be the same as today's. Even in our changeable climate, this is more that 50% accurate.

Saw a bit of it - a little simplistic, inevitably. Will be interesting to see what the weather watchers think of it, Anna!
I saw it when it was first on some weeks ago. A far better programme was a regional one (produced by BBC Bristol) about 10 days ago which concentrated on the 2012 weather as it affected S. Wales and the West. It was also very informative about the mysteries of the Jet Stream.
I was going to reply to mercia about the workings of the barometer but as mangerton says, this is one for S_A (our Weather Guru) to explain.
In the meantime I am exceedingly cross as I woke at 6am with a fit of the sneezes and ever since I've been sneezing and sniffling and obviously developing a major cold. I haven't had a cold for years!
Edit: Of interest to mangerton. When I went to Waitrose after the New Year they had a bargain reduced section of Christmassy stuff. There was Glayva liqueur, 50cl, for £5.99. Ho, Ho, thinks I, a bargain, and I snaffled it. When I got home and unpacked the shopping the receipt said "Reduced Advocaat" Obviously, I am now in a quandry, John Lewis staff have stuck the wrong barcode on something ..... shall I return and confess? No, I don't think so, do you?

Very sorry to hear about your cold. There's nothing more miserable, except of course man-flu, but I can't imagine you'll suffer from that. I would strongly recommend a very hot curry, and several hot toddies, preferably with lemon juice. It's rather a waste of your good Glenmorangie, but if you don't have any blended whisky in the house, just use it; your health is far more important. (I always have both in the cupboard. ) Get well soon.

With ref to your Waitrose tale, you bought it fair and square, not your fault if they put the wrong code on, so I strongly Advocaat - sorry, I mean advocate - that you keep the Glayva. I'm sure JLP can stand it, and in any case you have a nasty cold and it would be most unwise to go out on a January evening to return it.

On a similar note, home shopping with Tesco recently.... They sent me two sirloin steaks, but only charged me for one. However, I did the decent thing, and drank Jack Cohen's health when I ate them.

May I concur with ma' learned friend's sympathies and Advocaation in the matter of Waitrose -v- Anna

Yes I did! I went out during the "Is our weather getting worse?" and when I came back there were images of the Empire State Building under snow.... definite case of the for a few moments!

Just before Christmas Yorks Water wrote saying that an un-named near neighbour had informed them that their land did not drain into the sewerage. They had investigated and confirmed it. As our property has a similar set-up, they concluded that we were in the same situation, so kindly refunded just over £400 representing our rates contributions for drainage since 2000. They did the same to other neighbours.

Now I'm no expert, but I am a little surprised by their decision. The dilemma is: do I keep the money and keep my peace, or challenge it to assuage my conscience, but risk myself and the neighbours having to repay it?

I may take some considerable time in making my decision...

I would take a very long time in making a decision. They've made the refund to you of their own free will so your conscience is clear. Take the money and spend it on CD's! Yes, it is a strange thing for them to do but I've heard of similar in our district too.

Our O Level German teacher taught us this useful proverb: "Wenn der Hahn kräht auf dem Mist, ändert sich das Wetter oder es bleibt wie es ist!" (If the cock crows on the dung heap, the weather will change or stay as it is).

are you saying that you disagree with the water company that your drainage set-up is the same as the neighbour's ? in the first para you say it is the same

Yes, I suspect that they might have jumped to the wrong conclusion about my set-up, and that of other neighbours (they said "similar," not "identical." However I could be wrong.

No Celandines here that I can see but plenty of daisies .... it seems wet weather is to be expected here tomorrow and then low temperatures from Wednesday.
I am concerned that S_A has not been seen for two days here, I know he is trying to give up nicotine, perhaps he's having cold turkey? If he doesn't return I shall have to post Admiral Fitzroy's musings on the wonders of barometers to answer mercia's question!

Oh, please do that anyway. I'm sure it'll be a good read.

How's the cold? Did you try the curry and hot toddy cure?

Horrible day here. Pouring rain all day, it never got properly light, and it was dark before four. What a change from yesterday!

I couldn't see the computer screen without the light on all day - I really have a job to see anything when it's as gloomy as this. Just drizzle from the sky though, not real rain today.

                                No flowers/bulbs visible here yet.
