However, with the waning moon giving light and cloud cover here I doubt it'll be visible to me and anyway I'm too far South, but those in the North and NE are promised clear skies. I just thought I'd mention it to our early-rising Northeners!! You need to look to the NW to see it.

Isn't it nice to wake up to pretty sunrises and know the whole day will be dry?
Thank you! I'll have a look tomorrow morning.

With ref to your last sentence..... at the moment I've done about an hour's work by the time the sun's risen here.

No pretty sunrises here today, or expected for a few days. And, as for visible metor showers..............! But at least it's relatively mild for the start of a new year - 11 C here in S London today, and not expected to dip much over the next few nights! This is a most unusual weather situation for the time of year, with a high pressure system building from the south. If only it could happen in June or July, when the power of the sun would burn off the persistent low stratus cloud, with daytime temperatures expected in the mid to upper 20s C! .

Firstly, I hope saly is ok, she's not been seen on the MB for a couple of days.

Today, after a cloudy start (and a cloudy night - I did look out around 5.30am to see if there was any chance of watching the meterorites) it's been almost springlike and a brilliant, clear, blue sky, birds tweeting and so amazingly warm at 12° max and probably no chance of frost. The postman was sighted in a short sleeved shirt! Also, people are remarking on the lack of berries this year and although knowing it's an old wives tale are beginning to wonder if this Winter will in fact be benign? Are we still promised the cold snap mid-month. I always feel that if we can get through January without major snowfall and low temps then we're almost home and dry and Spring will soon be here!

I had problems in obtaining a cheap calendar yesterday to hang in the kitchen, there was one in particular with brilliant pictures of steam trains on it I really liked when I saw it before Christmas but all sold out! They only had Downton Abbey ones left! However, they had some smaller Rennie Mackintosh ones half-price (£1.49) which included a diary, which I bought. I shall now turn into a total weather geek and record weather things in it!

Looks OK for a few sets of tennis this evening.
December Oldie magazine included a free calendar (now in kitchen) with some quite droll cartoons.

No chance of meteorites here this morning. Very overcast, but amazingly mild. I do hope you're right about the weather, Anna, but you're a few hundred miles south, and I feel we'll pay for this. I'm always happier when February is over, but it can snow here in March and even April.

That calendar was amazingly cheap, even at half price! - around here the arty ones cost about a tenner new!!!

Brummie Simon still predicts a cold snap around the 15th: with the present high pressure moving to the east it seems to be lining up right.

Quiet on here today - I presume all SW regulars have been gearing up for, and are currently gripped by, this: http://www.channel4.com/programmes/i...-getting-worse

Saw a bit of it - a little simplistic, inevitably. Will be interesting to see what the weather watchers think of it, Anna!

A propos - startlingly mild in London today... Minimal heating felt too warm this afternoon and required windows to be flung open

Birds singing their lids off, and blossom and buds evident on many a bush in the gardens.

Some nasty shocks to come when they all realise Spring's not yet here

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

                          a few daffodils out here
our postmen always wear shorts whatever the weather

on the subject of barometers do they really tell you anything more than what can be deduced by looking out of the window ?

for example looking out of my window now it is calm and still, barely a breeze, therefore high pressure must be dominant
if it was windy there would be low pressure, the direction of the wind depending on where the low pressure was situated
it's as simple as that isn't it ?

No daffodils out here. In fact small marcissi are not even poking through the soil in my front garden. Nothing but long grass and weeds I'm afraid.

It seems cold to me but everyone says it isn't so it must be because I'm too skinny.

Ah, but you forgot - or at least didn't mention - the all-important tap. This indicates whether the pressure is rising or falling, and this in turn has a bearing on the weather.

No doubt S_A will be along soon to explain why this is so.
