    Hi Sal

Glad you had a good day with the relatives. And yes, it seems very cold at the moment.... Remember when we were moaning about the heat? Sigh.

Hi Mahlerei, yes it's colder than ever to me. Coz's [?] took big picture of the flying rabbit which I printed for one of their grandsons. Can't remember who posted it on the old boards. Remember it?

        Sigolene,

This morning in Rhode Island it's quite cold (25 F) but not as frigid as it will be in January. The ground is now hard and the garden is being put to bed under a layer of leaf mould (before the pile freezes up.) It's now time to cover the fig for the winter before the snow flies this weekend. While cutting back and mulching the other day, I thought of the musical names of some of my plants: Anemone 'Pamina', Iris 'Beverly Sills', Rose 'Falstaff'...and in a former garden Tulip 'Queen of the Night'. I do believe there's a Campanula 'Sarastro' available at garden centres. Does anyone else have a "musical" garden?

Yes, i remember that one :) My two safely inside their hangar as we speak, though Butters seems keen for a spin.

Post still haywire. It's my daughter's birthday tomorrow and her present hasn't arrived. I imagine your package is held up in the works as well.

I don't have a garden, Marthe, much less a musical one but I'm fond of the Schwartz/Dietz nonsense song, 'Rhode Island Is Famous For You'. Do you know it?

Thanks, Stillhomewardbound. I haven't heard this one in a long time! The film clips show our beautiful bridge and Narragansett Bay. This was the view from our old house on the water. Wonderful!

Hi Mahlerei, no packages yet, just appeals from various charities and such like. Why do they write back for more as soon as you've sent them something? Counter productive Iwould have thought.
Hard drive is hopefully now backing up my photos so will be earning its keep. bws saly

At long last the snow is starting to melt here as the temperature rises. The state of the roads and, especially, the pavements in my town in the past 10 days has been an absolute disgrace. Pavements totally untreated and not a gritter in sight. Last Tuesday morning it was minus 15 degrees here and though I've been to Moscow in December I've never before experienced such intense cold.

A musical garden, never took time to know such but am certain it is delightful, all these names, as this summer I came across the Julia Child yellow rose with a soft fragrance. I will certainly place more attention to the names, now marthe.

Well, I have tucked in my household, nearly everyone wearing icebreaker long underwear for pj's and all received a hot water bottle to take along with them after we had sugar cookies and hot chocolate.

sweet dreams to all in this bitter cold,
                    Sigolene

Morning all! Anyone up for a little mulled cider? It sure sounds good to me right now!

                      MULLED CIDER
                      • 3½ pts. / 2L dry cider or fresh apple juice
                      • 2 apples studded with cloves
                      • 4-6 cinnamon sticks
                      • 5-6 allspice berries
                      • zest of 1 orange
                      • dark rum (optional)
                      • slices of apple for garnish

Combine all ingredients in a large saucepan and simmer gently for 30 minutes - do not boil. Transfer to a heatproof bowl and ladle into glass mugs. Garnish with apple slices to serve.

Here's a picture from my friend's window (NYC) last February...hopefully I'll miss the worst of it this year!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Mahlerei's daughter, sorry I don't know/remember her name. Snow still there, will it ever go?

Thanks Am51, just been talking to you on Ballet thread. Yes, my printer ribbons are going fast, so rabbit was in a tasteful pale green shade but a big poster for a four year old resulted.

                              Hello Sal

Joanna says thanks for the good wishes. She is at home today having just had her blood test results. All clear, so a pressie in itself :)

                                Good morning
Stormyweatherites [if you are there] White stuff seems to have mostly gone but still seems bitterly cold to me. Hope to start Christmas shoppping but am not going to get beyond local shops which don't have many 'present worthy' items. I hope friends in the North/Scotland have less snow too. salymap
