Johnb ... as I've just bought a pair of these Yaktrax things I'm delighted to hear your report. I intend trying them out tomorrow as I always seem to fall head over heels in love with ice at the very first encounter and, as an upright sort of guy, I can't really stand the stuff as a result . Thank you for your assurance that my £19.34 has not been wasted.

I know - its those wonderful curves. They say the three most beautifil shapes are the violin, the naked female body, and the hull of a boat.
I'm happy with the first two, but I mostly get No 1 these days!

Hi Marthe !
Yes, my friend that has a vegetarian family has used Lorna's Vegetarian Cook Book for a long while, they love it and were relieved of the newer silent pressure cookers with a backup steam release. I can't encourage any of you enough to do a portion of your cooking in the pressure cooker.. .. the beef bourgogne is lush.. .. the seafood soup.. .. cheesecake.
But I love her book on the history of Elizabethan cooking most of all. Quite frankly I love ceremony and gathering at the table. We love to pick up a block of clay from an art store, roll it out with a rolling pin...place a seasoned chicken in it roll it up. Bake and issue small wooden mallets to each at the table. It is great fun. We also have these french gurgling fish carafes that we ALWAYS use for our beverages. Somehow the tail has air pockets and it lurps and glugs along as you pour and when you set it down.
I can not emphasize enough how Lorna's cook books revolutionized my daily cooking which at times can be laborious - the day in and day out.
Well. Welcome to here Marthe. I don't recall you, I've participated about a year and have found it a wonderful place of people and wealth of music. But last eve I streamed over to the USA to our favorite host at KUSC - Jim Svejda. He does a wonderful first hour of his show this time of year for children and it was a delight of Christmas music. My daughter danced to it all.
KUSC is the radio station of the University of Southern California / Los Angeles. We listen to Thornton Center Stage each Sunday evening. It is the current students at USC who perform.
Welcome to KUSC Los Angeles. Enjoy the beautiful calm and the joyful inspiration of our unique classical music mix and the California spirit of our friendly announcers.
ta,
Sigolene

Well I've never known such a heavy snowfall in years. We're now officially at 1 foot since 11pm last night and it's still coming. Many little villages now unreachable, even with 4x4 as it's also drifting. We shall walk to the pub later, we hope!
Can everyone please remember to try to put out food for birds - and even if you can for animals in fields, as the ones that don't hibernate still need to eat. Fat from a pork chop or the remains of a leg of lamb or a chicken will be appreciated by a hungry fox!
Take care all - and look out for elderly neighbours if you have any!

Oh DON'T get me started:
1) this morning, we were told it would be a very light dusting of snow; business as usual then, getting on with it in the British way.
2) so I took child to nursery (which was open owing to 1, above), the journey usually taking 15 minues or so.
3) about 3.30, I thought - ooh, it's falling thick and fast, I'd better leave early to pick said child up (I usually leave around 4.30 to pick up at 4.45 - it closes at 6) and if I am early, then it matters not.
4) at 3.35, I get to the main road that is at a standstill... why?
LORRY GOT STUCK GOING UP HILL - why? coz the gritters had yet to do their deed (see 1 above)
5) got to nursery at 6.30 (on foot, having abandoned vehicle /12 mile away) and home by 7.30 (roads still not gritted, but lorry 'removed').
I have often wondered HOW we get ourselves into this mess. Yes, a few inches can and do wreak havok and thereare good reasons why, but really... major roads etc should be prepared.
(I was, having 3 backs of rock salt in the shed purchased in the summer 'just in case' ....)
I really do feel for thise who cannot leave their homes or (small side) streets, but PLEASE can the Councils listen to the weather forecast when it comes to their maintenance of MAIN ROADS...
Rant over.
Until tomorrow am when it will all begin again....
