It might very well be catching. Many years ago in "The Doc Replies" column in a Scottish Sunday newspaper, this appeared: "Last week one of my friends gave me a pair of her shoes. I hear she now has appendicitis. Will I get it too?"

Easy to mock but here's Peter Cook giving Dudley Moore some sound advice on just such a topic :

Just seen various references to Sciatica....can I personally reccommend the use of a T.E.N.S. machine....really worked for me, when all else failed....(I think they are about ÂŁ70)....

Well, that's all true, isn't it? I'm sure I was told something very similar.

Thanks for posting. Pete and Dud were brilliant.

Thunderstorm No 2 of this afternoon about to hit S London. I can't ever recall temperatures this low, this far into May.

                  How's everyone faring?

Not too good thank you S-A. After losing my cordless phone in a storm a few years ago I keep unplugging things, then the sun comes out for five minutes.

A dreadful spell of weather and the longest day is only about five weeks away.

Here in Ultima Thule, we have just had a ferocious hail, sleet / snow blizzard driven by a nasty N wind. After a lovely gentle May afternoon. Plugged in some new young plants to discover many of them literally shredded in 20 minutes.

Several hailstorms today and a vicious cold wind here in Staffs. I've known a good number of Christmas Days warmer than today. I see that the Daily Depress is saying that this cold weather could last another month. Their predictions so far have been worryingly accurate.

As if there isn't enough gloom about already, this very poor weather is making one feel somewhat

I needed hat and gloves on my bike this morning. Some plants put out to harden off have been brought back to the kitchen window sill with frost promised tonight. Central heating keeps coming on again. I'm sure it's not usually required in May.

Lovely and warm under glass (Hymn to the Sun!) in our little lean-to conservatory, but go outside and it's out of the frying pan into the fridge! Pigeons, jackdaws and pheasants almost panicking for more, seed dispensers emptying in a day... maybe we'll just skip Spring and find ourselves thrust into a June heatwave... ("it's not the despair I can't stand, it's the hope...")

Don't bother about the Express Petrushka - remember they said last winter would be Siberian so...

I don't normally but their prediction for this Spring has been unnervingly spot-on. As an aside, I do recall snow in June on two occasions - 1963 and 1975.
One result of the bad weather is the prevalence of coughs and colds just now - including my own .
