    The Partner: Which?

these days I adopt an approach that requires that they come to me - I adopt an air of mystery that has thus far proved entirely resistible

There was a wonderful running gag in episodes of The Navy Lark which used to start with a phone ringing ...

      "Hello?"

"Hello! - this is Intelligence speaking - ain't I got a sexy voice?!"

      "Frankly no!"

"Ere, what is the secret of my magnetic repulsion?"

Well, that's how I remember it

To Our Friends In The North:-

We heard the news about the disruption this morning, and hope you're all managing to cope.

Down in the basking South it's our equivalent of Eye of the Storm weather; pretty much calm, puffy cumulus just starting to build and invade what had been a clear blue sky first thing.

I expect we'll get some heavy thundery-type showers later this afternoon and evening. Last night it absolutely pelted down - people hanging around beneath shop awnings, dashing for shelter etc. Much-needed, mind, and looks like more to come over the next few days, if not in such high quantities. Staying rather on the cool side. So, for the time being, the tenders will have to remain behind!

we most certainly are getting the rain in the middle kingdom .... cold windy and very wet .... and very needed ... the verticla drop at the reservoir from normal to current water level is some two metres ... a huge volume of water given the surface area and among the lowest in nigh on thirty years ...

We've got it in bucket fulls - wet and sleety stuff, but snow alright. Started in the middle of night.
And it hasn't stopped yet. Going straight to slush as it lands. This means the cats refuse to go out and wake up occasionally to vent their frustration in odd semi-aggressive games (elderly sisters - what else would you expect?)

So - not much coping needed - not at work today...and the forecast is for bright sunshine tomorrow, so it won't be lingering.
Obviously all public transport has ground to a halt, Snake Pass is closed, lorries stuck - yet there was gritting going on last night allegedly.
Slushy stuff should give the ground a good soaking, and may even raise the reservoirs a fraction.

Same here in central London, saly. Cycle ride in this morning was raw, back to the big coat, scarf and gloves. I could see my breath as I stepped out. As you say, it felt like a dank morning in late November.

Had to drive to Cambridge yesterday - vaguely misty, drizzly, but the wind kept clouds going and the sun broke through from time to time, giving unusual and lovely hazy, glowing light over the countryside
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Some of the Pennine hilltops are still covered with snow, but "lower down" it's a chilly but very bright day: a "Simpsons" sky - very little cloud; so probably another frost overnight tonight.

the middle kingdom is drying out and getting just a tad sunny ... and warming too ... kind of spring day where one finds oneself overdressed eh

My long beech hedge still has its brown winter leaves. It should show some green shoots by now. Everything
                            is waiting for some rain. {Knowing my luck, it will probably rain for the rest of the year now.}

While a handful of people can play games and earn millions of pounds (or Euros), my vegetables will wither. There is no way I can water all my beans and cabbages with a watering can. My pond is a drinking place for the birds and animals. They’ll have to go thirsty. All sounds mad to me.

Using a hosepipe to water a garden, water plants, fill a pond not containing fish, or clean outdoor surfaces are all banned as are filling and maintaining ornamental fountains.

But exemptions are in place for grass and surfaces used for national and international sports which means the Olympic and Paralympic games will be unaffected.

Hosepipe bans affecting about 20 million customers have been introduced by seven water authorities in parts of southern and eastern England.

Sports sell, that's the most important reality to come to terms with, not the fact that they can neither be eaten nor drunk.

When will it next rain, properly? On Easter Monday.
