"Back to civilisation, dear", dad once said to mum, as our train from Middlesbrough pulled in to Kings Cross.

It's been snowing lightly, on and off, since 10.30am but now closing in and getting heavier however temperature slowly rising and now -0.6 as opposed to -6 first thing so could very well turn into sleet I think. Eastern Counties, London & S.E. still forecast to get the worst of it late on and overnight.

The ultimate insult from some pigeons. I made a scone round, certainly not my best ever, and some birds pecked at it and walked away. Ungrateful creatures.

Has anyone got the white stuff yet? 4 inches forecast for here. Let's hope they are wrong.

PS Sorry Anna, hadn't seen your post.

Same here... put some stale bread out... spoilt birds of central London haven't touched it!

o surely - central London birds insist on organic focaccia or pain poilâne at the very least - what were you offering them - Mother's Pride, I bet...

You can repose your valise wherever you like, vinjaune. I'm not ashamed! Good unpretentious British stodge, and proud of it!

Quite frankly - I'm shocked. It was bad enough to read on the Rugby thread that you were going to have a Tesco paella but Tesco white bread stodge ........ it really is beyond the pale!

I thought that would raise a shout from the principality!

I've only got one thing to say: Allez les Bleus!!

Oh, actually I will be willing Les Bleus on after their sudden regeneration (once they had stopped having a mutiny) in the World Cup!

My late Nain was also keen on ham sarnies, preferably with coffee a la mode du Nord-Ouest, i.e., made with instant coffee granules and boiling full-fat milk

She did once threaten that if we had said victuals at her post-funeral baked meats do, she would come back to haunt us all!!

The PFBMD is taken very seriously in Colwyn Bay - you can even have English hymns at the service if you must, but there must never be skimping at the PFBMD

And, there used to be a very strange delicacy, particularly at Maiden Aunts' funerals, which were strangrely called Bridge Rolls ... either egg & cress or ham & tomato. I suppose now it's more likely to be a selection of Tapas?

Various words there: "good" ; "unpretentious" ; "British" ; "stodge" ; "proud".

I think Jonathan Meades could make a six-part series unpacking that lot...

Incidentally - Mother's Pride... sound so different, doesn't it? - as la Fierté de Maman - or Mutterstolz ...
