Yes indeed, saly. Tomorrow night cools off quite significantly, presaging quite a cold, if sunny weekend, then a blocking high to ther east means the wind comes round from Poland, for how long I can't say.

Still very mild across the Pond for our friend(s), but their temperatures will also be nearer the expected values by weekend. We've been very lucky here thus far - a long mild spell shortens a dismal winter.

Should be taken care of by next week if the forecasters have got it right. The plants we should be concerned about are the wild ones flowering at the moment when they should be in dormancy at this time of year - many of which could perish when frosts come.

There was a differemt kind of rhubarb crisis in 2010 due to The Delia Effect. The Waitrose campaign for her rhubard and ginger brulee was launched before English rhubard was ready. In four days Waitrose sold as much rhubarb as they would normally have sold in 14 weeks, leading to emergency supplies of rhubarb being imported from Europe. English growers were furious at missing the opportunity for increased sales.

If growing rhubarb in a garden for domentic consumption,it is easy to force it by putting a large pot or bucket over it. My dad used to do that with 'champagne' rhubarb and it was early and a lovely flavour.

Back to weather and plants... . It's still quite mild here, but as S-A notes, winter is on it's way! Saly, I'm planning to start a rhubarb patch in my garden this spring, and shall be seeking your expert advice!

I'm on pins and needles this AM because our new car (2010 Hyundai Accent) is arriving this afternoon. We've been carless (except for MG) for a while. I don't drive shift and can't drive the MG, so have had to rely on shanks pony to get around. This is very exciting. Unlike most Americans, I did not learn to drive as a teenager and have had a love/hate relationship with anything on wheels.
