Yes I agree with Chris. Best wishes to all up North. I'll never forget 'our' two scary days in the S/E with large trees sliding gracefully along the middle of the road dropping branches as they progressed.

We are not having it as bad as Scotland but on my walk tonight I had to avoid the wheelie bins sliding down the streets!

A wheelie bin blew into me earlier this evening here in darkest Herefordistan and my woodstore - admittedly somehwat empty with perhaps only 30kgs' worth of logs therein - blew over and went through the gates into the road outside where I fond it on my return. In the Cairngorms, howevdr, I understgand tghat a gust of almost 250kph was recorded at one point today, so I should perhaps be lucky that my wheelie and/or woodstore didn't blow into the nearest village and kill people...

Well, the cold front went through at around 7 with only half an hour's moderate rain and not much more wind than had been blowing all day, so I guess we got off lightly in London. There's a great fireworks display happening right now at the South Bank, which I can see from here. Goodness knows what's being celebrated!

Here, 10.30pm, all is calm, not a breath of wind and again, so warm, no need for heating or an extra layer, windows can be opened, and will be. Somehow, it's not either healthy nor natural. Or, are we conditioned to expect x, y, z, from the Seasons? Perhaps we should all chill out and take what comes?

Looks like the next lot of fun and games will be Monday, moving on into Tuesday. This time it appears Scotland should escape the brunt, which will hit Ireland, Wales and Lancashire/Cumbria, though I don't think winds will be quite as strong as yesterday's. Anyway, advice is: follow the Boy Scouts' motto. Off now to get my Xmas cards, while, er, the sun shines!

I think S-A should be our resident meteorologist! Beautiful sunny day here, not warm at 8 degrees but hardly any wind, clear skies but within the last hour it's dropped right down to 3.6 and no doubt Jack Frost will be around!

I had my meters read and got a letter from the dual energy company. They owe me money (I pay by direct debit) Obviously it's been so mild no heating has been necessary. Dilemma as to whether to demand the money back or be reckless and turn everything up!!!

Nothing exciting happening here. Sunny and still warm for the season. Beautiful moon tonight. Jack Frost hasn't nipped our garden yet. I usaully have the figs covered and the roses mounded by now. My calendula and Mexican Flame Vine are still blooming away. Christmas program at the house museum tomorrow. Somehow have to get in the spirit.

saly: sorry to hear about your guttering. I hope you can get it fixed without too much trouble.

It was -2.2 at 7.00 am when I got up, bit nippy, on the field it looked like a sprinkle of snow, Jack Frost had been a bit of a lad it seems before Dawn's rosy fingers finally did their magic and the Sun got his Hat on. It slowly rose to 8 degrees but an hour ago temperatured plummeted. Not happy about the dire Met Office warnings for Mon and Tues re strong winds.

Saly, would your guttering be covered under insurance for storm damage? Worth a go?

I was thinking, house I grew up in, rambling Victorian pile, huge rooms, high ceilings, no central heating, coal and wood fires, but nothing in the bedrooms. Going to bed, as a child, was, quick, quick, jump into bed. Oh, thank goodness, a hot water bottle. Shiver, Shiver under icy sheets, then, blissfully warm within a few minutes. But, I never recall being cold. Is it right that in the bleak mid-Winter we should expect to be indoors in nothing but a t-shirt? I just layer up and find most homes suffocatingly warm and airless.
