Now on CH 4 - David Lean's famous "Brief Encounter".

Just the thing for a wet autumn day, and probably the last time it will be on terrestrial TV.

Last time was a very long time ago, mercia. I only got digital last year: it all goes over next April; the chances of "Brief Encounter" being on again before then are pretty remote, I would think.

ah yes, I see what you mean (I think). I was thinking perhaps you meant I would have to buy Sky to ever see it again.

I love the film but it gets more dated day by day. Much older films seem to have more 'shelf life' in my opinion.

Good to have you back, salymap. A lovely morning here in NW2 - clear blue sky & sunshine, a good soaking last night

Glorious day in central London, indeed! (Sorry, bbm!). Golden leaves, blue skies, a cooling but not cold breeze, still some warmth from the sun. Perfection!!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

'Twas sunny earlier, but now grey. Mood not lightened by a truly awful new recording of Busoni's Piano Concerto. Aaargh.

Really sorry to hear that, Mahlerei: for all its Lisztian uber-extravangance, the Busoni is a work I have much affection for. Which version would that be - just for the sake of not getting it!?

Glorious day here too in South Wiltshire. Forecast is another heatwave. The snow in mid-October never came.

Yes, it's an endearing work, albeit not one I listen too very often. The version in question is the Naxos one from La Vecchia and his Roman band. Inexpicably awful after their very fine discs of Casella's First and Second Symphonies. One to avoid, IMO.

Thanks for the forewarning, M! As happens I have the Casella, and agree. Casella 1 shocked me when I first heard it, being much more "Germanic" than I had been expecting, but very good, for all that.
