I finally heard from my relatives in North Haven, Connecticut, late on Thursday. They had been without power until then but luckily had a generator. Still lots of blocked roads/flooding. I also have family in Bermuda and they are getting a bit anxious about Hurricane Katia which is slow moving but could hit them Wednesday. Irene and then t.s. Jose changed course and didn't affect them unduly. Of course, the tropical storm season is June to November for them and they're pretty used to having everything tied down during those months. I notice the other names allocated for the 2011 season are Maria, Nate, Ophelia, Philippe, Rina, Sean, Tammy, Vince, Whitney. I wonder who chooses the names?

Nate is a fairly common name over here and is pronounced with a long A to rhyme with skate. It's short for either Nathan or Nathaniel, both names used here in New England. Boy's name of course. When I was young, all hurricanes were named for girls. Not sure when that changed. Probably in the 70s. The hurricanes of my childhood had names such as Carol (1954), Diane, Edna (later 50s), Donna (1960), Agnes (early 1970s). In more recent years, we've had, in New England, David(1979), Gloria (1985), Bob (1991), and Irene (2011). Not all storms make their way this far north, but when they do, they pack a wallop and cause great damage and disruption. Old timers still talk about the Hurricane of 1938 (no name); historical record shows the Great Gale of 1815 to have been a very destructive September hurricane here in Rhode Island.
Anna, I'm glad your rels in North Haven have got their power back. It is completely maddening to be without for an extended period. We went through this during Gloria (late Sept. 1985) when our children were babies.
