My advice, Calum: lose weight in summer (salads) when you can afford to; put it on in winter (anti-chill factor, anti-infection insurance) when you need to.

Mmm...apple crumble!! No shame in buying the topping, saly! it's all delicious! Crumble would be just the thing today as we're having a deluge and cool temps as well. I'm actually enjoying having a rainy day. Time to catch up on a few long-neglected projects.

          Hi marthe!

We heard it announced on our lunchtime news that New York has just experienced it's wettest day since records began. 8 inches of rain in 24 hours. I guess you must have got caught up in that weather system!

Hello marthe, rather humid here but had some sun earlier. It's thinking of my mum that makes me ashamed if I take short cuts in anything. It's too early for Bramleys but I'm not going to waste the windfalls with the price of food now.

What a busy lady you are, how is your garden ?

No, not drowned yet!!! Wishing I could have crumble with custard, though! A cup of tea and toast with honey will have to do.

Saly, my garden is actually perking up with all this rain. Everything had become so dry and dusty; quite brown around the edges. Best of all, I won't need drag the hose or lug watering cans for a while. I'm thinking of investing in a rain barrel or two to catch all the lovely free water that's streaming down from the downspouts! It will be well worth the investment, when one considers the cost of Newport city water.

A very good idea, conservationwise, too, marthe!

I love the friendly banter here. Keep it coming!

After a very brief "bright interval" the deluge is upon us once more! Off to bed now with a cup of mint tea and book. Shopping day tomorrow, then back to work on Wednesday. Sister's wedding coming up on Sunday, so need to get a gift.

"rain barrels" ... er they are known as 'water butts' here Marthe, might have a rather different connotation in the USA .. as in does my ___ look good in this? a Dutch friend who was a complete nutter for Fuchsias, he must have had hundreds of varieties, built a concrete tank in his greenhouse which collected the rainwater from its roof ... he did not mind the endless trips with the watering can as he could gaze upon his favourite flora ...
