    ...
Too bad for the folks who were attending the Jazz Festival today.
...ah well every silver lining has its cloud

They covered themselves with alacrity, saly! I was just representing them as their staff rep., and told him his work load necessitated their presence alongside everyone else. The compromise solution was they had to wear lab coats provided by the company for the day.

Well, it's certain that we [almost] see all life on this thread.

Hope the weather suits you, whether dry or wet. Hope antongould hasn't been washed away too.

I have not been washed away yet but we have had a lot of rain and it's very cold - indeed Lady Gould has decreed that the fire in the Great Hall must be ablaze this evening.

I hope this rioting is not too close to where you are.

Being a nimby, so do I doversoul. Lewisham and Croydon were mentioned earlier on the news.

It seems to be in other large cities as well as London.

Stormy weather here too in Beijing this evening where, as I write this, it is currently @ 6:20 p.m. Thunder, Lightning and Rain as I look out of the window. Temperatures today were in the 30 degrees Celsius and periodically we get downpours to take the sting out of the heat. Whether tonight's downpour is due to Typhoon Muifa or merely "Cloud Busting" - who can tell. Life here can be such a mystery at times

                Best Wishes,

                Tevot

Just hoping when the time comes the kids exhaust themselves sufficiently on the climb up here to keep the upper Norwood triangle shopping district safe. One thing that's nice about this area is that it missed out on the gentrification process that took over districts like Islington, Stoke Newington and Clapham - though that by no means guarantees immunity, as we see with Hackney and Peckham. It's certainly quiet here with the schools on holiday. In the opposite direction there's the football stadium-like Sainsburys down at Bell Green - their biggest branch anywhere; I wonder how many piled up tyres fuelled by nicked benzine it would take to burn that place down.

ah well we could all go to Brighton for the weekend and have a festival there .... middle kingdom is placid , sunny and distant thank goodness, but last Saturday night two different attempts were made to kick my front door open by the local version of a good Saturday night out ..... incredibly startling and one feels so impotent to give them a clip around the ear ... in the UK at least i think we could all do with several days of sustained heavy rain ...

Dampen things down a bit, Calum! No riots here, just the week-end party crowd and badly-behaved tourists. Years ago, there were riots at the Jazz Festival (1960)! Otherwise, it's business as usual here. We're on the outskirts of town, so the downtown noise doesn't touch us much. Though, someone saw fit to "borrow" a small garden statue (a stone gargoyle) from just inside the garden gate. I'm rather hoping he comes back ala the garden gnome in the film Amelie.

@Tevot: please keep us posted with your weather (and news) from Beijing!

Crystal Palace shops in the torching line tonight, according to the mobile grapevine here.

Stay safe, all. Riots are neither fun nor funny.

Hello marthe. You are absolutely right. I wish the BBC, and probably other broadcasters, wouldn't fill their bulletins with 'sound pictures' of broken bottles, yobs shouting and angry cries from 'both sides'.

It can do nothing but exacerbate the situation.

It seems a nice morning, coolish but sunny at the moment.

                              It's radio as TV.

By the way if you live east of here - and practically everybody in UK does - beware, it is sheeting it down in Ultima Thule and heading your way. Current temp 11C and wind howling. Have fun.
