The Met office had forecast heavy rain for all day yesterday - which I wasn't looking forward to as I had quite a bit of driving to do in the morning/early afternoon. As it turns out, they were wrong, and a couple of light showers aside, it was a mild and dry day.

The rain has arrived today, however - along with some blustery wind!

<< we can cop it >>

And have we copped it or what this a.m .!!
Cascades of rain, practically horizontal, driven by burgeoning and ferocious winds, and streets of town virtually deserted. Not cold. Children going off to school as usual without top coats of any kind. I asked one why, and he said 'because there's nowhere to hang coats.' Hmm. And, best of all, 'no-one wears coats'. Even more Hmm.

Consistent huge volume of water passing the bottom of my road in the beck (that's been going on for 24 hours) Now rising again; what is usually 4" is now 4'....and it will all end up at York tomorrow.....

Ref kids....well ask the teachers who have to deal with soaked children all day, I guess.

Just rinse them out, one at a time. Best to start at the top end by wringing their necks. Simples!

We're paying for one of the best autumns I have ever seen in this part of the world.

Re kids in shirtsleeves in the worst weather: we have droves of them, male and female, charging about looking "hard". Admittedly they are a year or two older, but they make my wet-weather gear seem very wimpish.

Still, I am avoiding the clutches of the health service as best I can.

This brought back school memories from long ago. Encouraged by my dear mother, I used to wear a vest to school in cold weather. This was pretty soon deemed to be a symptom of hopeless wimpishness by fellow-11-year-olds at secondary school, so I complied and renounced the vest and have done so ever since. I'm wondering whether, as I approach senile frailty, I might end up reinstating it.

Oh, yes indeed. It is not cold at all, I agree, and I see the same thing, but.......

A ridiculously mild day here. No sunshine but temp been around 17 degrees nearly all day as it was at 8.30 this morning which beat a good many of the mornings in July.

Lots of people in shirt sleeves, no shorts spotted but probably the final bare midriff of the year.
