Normally I've lost more than the half stone I've lost this summer by this point in the year, but it's all down to salads usually being my diet exclusively from the start of June. This year I started later, having had to wait longer for some decent warmth.

Today, it's only made it up to 19 degs. C - 3 C below the average max - following last night's 10 C. Hopefully the combination of sunshine and rain that now seems to be on the cards will aid the bare patches in the lawn I've re-seeded with top-quality grass seed from the local Pound ship!

Not bad going SA! :) Had a ruby murray last night. Very nice.

Hmmm don't think this supposed heatwave is coming our way?

Cloudy and very windy (again) here but no sign, as yet of the forecast heavy rain. Just heard from someone in Spain who are having their hottest summer in 40 years. We're getting desperate here for even a little bit of that.

It rained steadily all day Friday but it was light rain, sometimes just heavy drizzle so amounted to approx 22mm, a help to the gardeners but not enough and yesterday was lovely, sunny and bright. (I also put some grass seed down in the hope of patching up bareness where an overhanging shrub had been)

Today we have heavier rain, not warm at just over 12°, slight breeze, but Met Office have weather warning for high winds tomorrow for S. Wales & The West. Looking at the charts it seems the jet stream is going to be stuck where it is for around the next 10 days bringing more of the same. Nothing to be done about it but this July has been the most dismal I can remember, our Summer definitely was in April! I've put my holiday Oop North back to end of August/beginning of September, I do hope I won't have to pack waterproofs ......

Well done BBM for amazing weight loss - I suppose the curry was a reward!

The heavy rain has now arrived and it's bucketing down!

My main source of info "Brummie Simon" hasn't been around for a week since announcing more settled anticyclonic conditions for mid-late August, so either he's sticking to his hopes - in which case you've made a right decision, Anna - or himself gone on holiday, leaving his sidekick Gary to keep us informed.

Here the clouds tricked me today at 12 noon, into thinking a clearance was coming into view, just like the did on Friday evening. With all my experience I should have known better, because it's never a promising sign during prolonged rain if the wind suddenly drops out, as this can indicate that the system producing the rain has ground to a halt. The low scud clouds are still approaching from the SSE, meaning the front and its main area of rain lies still out to our west.

A queue of quite deep low pressure systems lining up to cross the middle kingdom for the next week, I fear, which will mean either rain or showers, quite strong winds, especially in the west, and below-normal temperatures until the jet stream makes up its mind and shifts to the north of Scotland, bringing winds from a warmer source.

Temperature indoors cooler than we keep the house at in winter, but we have resisted the temptation to turn the CH on, and instead have lit a candle, both for additional warmth and to dispel some of the gloom, as it's still pouring with rain here.

Spoke too soon! Raining here now, and as for seemingly eight unbroken months, wind. Everyone I speak to here and many relations elsewhere all commenting on the WIND, whatever the sun / rain etc are doing.

Absolutely the same here. As I noted above, no matter what the prevailing conditions, sun, rain, high pressure, low pressure, the strength of the wind has been a constant factor since the end of last October. All very puzzling.

Imagine, if you will, a couple of hundred people sitting in the grounds of Urquart Castle, with Loch Ness stretching away into the distance, and a band playing - OK, it's Christian music, so that might not be your thing!

Idyllic, you might think. Except that last night - yes, 26th July - it was ferociously cold. I had prepared -tee shirt, dress shirt, thickest sweater in my wardrobe, and winter coat with fleece lining. Oh! And cap, naturally. It wasn't enough, and I am just beginning to warm up fourteen hours later having had a bowl of porridge, hot bath, hot water bottle in bed, and a stiff walk with the dog this morning.

Why must we Brits persist in arranging outdoor events, when the weather becomes ever more unpredictable by the day? Antiques Roadshow is a case in point. More often than not all are clustered under umbrellas, or gazebos.

                            Summer? Bah!

Lovely hot summer day in London, with a warm breeze to bring some relief from the strong sun.

                                Perfect for the cycling event...
