Blimey! After a very dry, hot day there was the loudest hailstone storm here in the Pennines at about 11:30 last night that I've ever experienced, which went on for about half-an-hour. I'd been listening to Beethoven's Ghost Trio; the storm started in the First Movement, and the Second was inaudible because of the hailstones hitting the roof and windows - it really did sound like an angry crowd was chucking pebbles at the house ("Not again!", I thought). The street was gushing with water, so there must have been a mixture of rain and hail, and the ground couldn't be seen as the gutters tried to cope. Real apocalyptic stuff (thunder and lightning, too) - simultaneously scary and exciting!

This morning - slightly cloudy but, apart from a couple of damp patches on the road, and a lot of leaf and petal fall, no evidence of the storm. Reports on "Streetlife", though, of damage to "property" from a couple of contributors who bought their conservatories cheap!

Going onto the Met Office site and looking up "the last 24 hours", my area is described as having a "clear night"!!!

If you want to follow the progress of the approaching thunderstorms (currently over northern France) you can see the positions of lightning strikes at http://www.lightningmaps.org/realtime

Isn't it a wonderful timewaster!! Fun watching the two main storm areas moving up into the North Sea, with just a few odd strikes over eastern England.

I'm just back from holiday this evening, and a neighbour told me I missed a spectacular storm in the small hours of today.

A look online revealed this in the local paper. Some good photos here.

Wow, yes - and the "UK lightning tweets" shows "my" storm! Look at the activity north of Leeds between 11:00pm and midnight!

                          Bugger all lightning here
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Today's activity seems to have been further east, running up the Normandy coast and then into the North Sea. Currently there seems to be considerable activity over much of the Netherlands and out to the north.

Your fun site seemed to indicate earlier that there was quite an outbreak right over Bbm country... but that could have been the man himself practising the tuba part of "Unter Donner und Blitz" after a pint of Spitfire too many!

That storm seemed to largely dissipate when it reached land.
