Crazy weather in the Manchester area since lunchtime.
More like mid November than the start of June.
Not much fun walking dogs in this,well for me it isn't,they don't seem to mind.

We seem to have got away with it remarkably lightly in view of all the warnings yesterday. Windy, yes, but not reaching gale force; little other than spots of rain in the breeze; mostly just fresh leaves blown down. But being on the north side of a ridge, the spot where I live is rather sheltered from SW, especially with the trees in full foliage offering extra protection.

....Upper Airedale must of had special attention from the wind....never seen so much debris on roads....a lot of Chestnut tree seem to have lost a great many large and small boughs....

Yes a blustery but pleasantly mild wind for the ride across town this morning, and no rain. A fair scattering of leaves and the odd branch on the ground in the Parks were the only evidence of a stormy night

Whereas where I live is facing directly SW (actually WSW to be totally accurate) and we had 24 hours of storm with constant strong wind gusting at around 50mph from the WSW !! There's nothing to stop the wind and rain sweeping down the valley. I was out at 6.00am yesterday trying to prop up my 5' foxgloves - which had been standing proudly erect like soldiers on parade against the wall - before the wind left them badly listing and battered. My newly planted Anchusa has also suffered stem damage, my tomatoes are are 45 degrees and it's lucky I delayed planting my runners out else they'd be ripped to shreds. However, on the bright side, it wasn't a bit cold at around 16° and winds like that, when it's not cold, are rather exhilarating and rather energising.

In fact, May has been lovely as regards sunshine and daytime warmth, but as soon as the sun goes down there's a real chill, not enough to put the heating on as an extra jumper does the job but, as Petrushka keeps pointing out, why so constantly windy, no-one here can ever remember such sustained wind nearly every day. Made me laugh yesterday, the weather forecasters kept referring to 'a stiff breeze' or 'slightly blustery', of course they're in London where you don't get proper weather. It seems we'll have a bit more warmth and calmer conditions over the next few days - of course you coddled Southerners will get a heatwave ....

Well, looks like it's to be a great day weather wise. This I am glad, as it's my father's funeral today. We will be blessed with a concelebrated Requiem Mass, presided over by a monk that my parents have known since 1959, and The Parish priest and also The Abbott of the Abbey. We actually had to change the date, as the Abbott, wanted to be part of the proceedings. I feel quite proud of that fact. I think that is ok, yes?

Oh yes, Bbm - wonderful that your father made such an impression on so many people. I hope the service went - as well as these things possibly can (and at least the weather looks as though it's doing its best for you). Best wishes to all the family.

Hi Ferney. thank you. Yes the Requiem Mass went very well. My brother did a rough head count and he thought there was around 120 people attended. ~We feel so fortunate that my father had such an impact on various people's lives.

I expect most of London was woken by the early morning thunderstorms that had me out of bed in a flash (!!!) and outside in me dressing gown, gazing up at the amazing high-base thunderclouds, and some impressive lightning.

When hot moist air comes up from Spain, already destabilised by crossing the Pyrenees (sp?), gets undercut by colder air coming in from the Atlantic, the resultingly nicknamed "Spanish Plume" gives us one of meteorology's more exciting set-pieces - signs of which were already evidenced in the W Midlands by yesterday afternoon, if this outdoor observation clip from "Brummie Simon" is anything to go by:

The surface wind, from the SE earlier on, has now switched to the SW, as indicated by low cumulus rolling in under a still will it?/won't it? layer of high thundery cloud spreading up from the south. In my experience that usually means we're out of the woods, but it still feels very close and oppressive out there - temperature 23 C, down 1 degree from a couple of hours ago.
