Another glorious evening here, and a lovely walk.
The ground is cracking up all over, and as hard as the cheese in the fishmongers.

BBMs friends win euphamism of the week,IMO.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.

What would that be, Cali? Loitering within tent?

Certainly a change with the weather today!! Rain earlier and I think the sun is trying to make an appearance?

What a lovely Summer we’re having! (Apart from yesterday which was grey with a sharp wind and a lot colder at 14°) I’ve been on holiday – not swanning about somewhere exotic or gorging on French patisseries but hard labouring - a necessary staycation in fact – in order to carry on with the garden makeover, so each day I’ve been digging, clearing ivy, honeysuckle and – a most difficult job – about a square yard of impenetrable rhizomes which lock together like a thick giant rubber lego model. Each day has been around 18°, the sun has shone, the birds, bees and butterflies have been in abundance which is more than the hired help who have overbooked themselves but promise to arrive to do stump grinding and fencing in about 10 days time! Lovely day today as well, bit of fine moisture around midmorn but cleared to just under 16°, rain promised, plants could do with it but ground perfect at the moment, nice and friable for digging. The exciting part is to come – a complete replanting (totally boring of course to those without gardens!)

No doubt some folk are muttering darkly “We’ll pay for this” but I think, after a brief unsettled period, that we’re in for more glorious weather?

Not here acrost the Bristol Channel we're not! It's grey, damp and miserable in E Cornwall
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

Anna lives in what is known as a rain shadow, LMP.

Actually, today looks like the last warmish day for a while as more unsettled westerlies start crossing us all. "Brummie Simon" for once, is completely lost for predictions for the forthcoming bank holiday weekend!

S_A, what's the difference between a rain shadow and the Foehn effect then or are they basically the same?

I think the prediction here (at the moment) for bank holiday is scattered showers but it's probably a bit too early to look ahead.

More or less the same, Anna: I think the Foehn is a bit more dramatic because the mountains causing the heating and drying effect on the leeward side are of course much higher.

Glad to hear you're making headway on the garden upgrade. Are you going for a cottage garden look? Or a raked shingle Zen garden congruent with your contemplative personality? Here, with the departure of the last of the grumpies, I've at last managed to persuade the other residents into us having a compost heap. Right now though I'm listening to Jazz Line-Up in my old paint-spattered boiler suit, having this year managed to complete the season's spring cleaning operation in just 2 days! - one of those jobs which, rather like banging one's head against a brick wall, is done to make one feel much better than would otherwise be the case, once done!

I think the Zen area will have to remain, too expensive to remove all that gravel! But as for the rest, I'm in two minds so waiting until I've a blank canvas except for my dingly-dell where I'm pleased the two giant ostrich ferns have survived another winter .....

I've had JLU on as well! Spring cleaning, not thought of that, I suppose you mean more than a bit of dusting and a vacuum under the furniture? I guess the paintwork could do with a bit of a wipe with a damp cloth .....

Edit: clouded up now, guess the rain promised for later is arriving

All sounds very industrious, Anna and S-A .

cleared the shed out last weekend, room for a sit and some contemplative zen stuff now....or a glass of homebrew....

( Hope S-A's brick wall is ok....)

                          drizzling here now.

It is exactly that, Anna - (how is it that ones walls manage to get splattered with food residues far distant from both the cooking and eating areas? ) - plus washing the insides of all my windows: the outsides having been done a week ago done by a visiting firm whom I arrange as part of my duties (including the garden) do the entire block, very reasonably priced at £6 for the downstairs flats and £9 the upstairs maisonettes. The trickiest part of the rest of my truly all-in flat cleaning operation is trying to remember which nuts and washers go in what order when replacing the loo seat. Getting that wrong could easily land the unexpecting user on the floor!!!
