Eclipse distinctly underwhelming in Derby despite perfect conditions. It went a bit darker, almost as if it was about to rain and as the temperature was cold to start off with a degree or two less wasn't noticed. The last one on August 11 1999 was even more underwhelming.

A total non-event but at least it's Friday.

Not in Loughton, which is where I happened to be on that day. The daylight faded, with blue in the colour spectrum becoming strongly accentuated at the expense of all other hues, and the normally bustling midday town centre becoming eerily quiet. I was able to take several shots.

Well I'm sorry that Pet was underwhelmed by both eclipses although I do recall the previous one was more dramatically dark, but I was in a different location with different altitude and different weather. (Caliban, of course, was mightily miffed that the eclipse wasn't Londoncentric and the Metrollops - and therefore him - wasn't the centre of attention!) Also, on our local BBC News yesterday the reporter said "Here in Dundee, the sunniest City in the UK, such was the demand that they ran out of glasses!" Funny how mangerton hardly ever mentions the wall to wall sunshine he enjoys there ....

I thought yesterday was deeply satisfying from a cosmological point of view. First the eclipse, then the beautiful weather which ended as over 14°, with a negligible 0.8mph WNW wind. Then, late afternoon, some patchy cloud cover resulted in a tremendous sunset - amber, burnt orange, russet - sunset splashed amongst and under charcoal clouds heralding the Equinox later on and, to top it all off, around 2.30am beautiful clear skies and bright, bright stars.

Dullish today but cloud cover quite high, should be sunnier tomorrow but both days cooler, not expected to get over 9°-ish. I intend to take advantage of the dryness and sort out and dig over a patch of the garden.

A lovely day yesterday! Today rather a mixed bag. Sunny intervals, I think is the phrase used!

                That's a shame. Poor Caliban.

As far as the sunshine goes, naturally I don't like to boast. Actually, I was unaware of this statistic, though I've now had a look online and it appears to be true. It's certainly much drier here than the west coast where I lived previously.

It's a fine sunny day here again today, though only about 6º C.

It was good to see Dundee's Mills Observatory on the news yesterday, Britain's first purpose-built (1935) public observatory.

Good to learn about The Almighty being happy with His handiwork!

Mostly cloudy and windy here today, with occasional bursts of light rain - returning from the pharmacist this morning had to cycle head down into this pesky northerly; the maximum of 8 degs C seems unlikely to be exceeded here over the next 5 days - where is this spring, I wonder, until I look across The Pond and note how perishing cold their weather still is! Marthe must be wondering when their winter is coming to an end!

Where is this Spring? Well it's down by here! I've just come in, tired but happy, after spending the afternoon grubbing around where an overgrown hedge was much reduced, digging up ivy, etc., and raking out debris, as after lunch the sky cleared to blue, temps rose and maxed at 10.6° with the N.Easterly around 2.2mph, gusting occasionally to 9mph. It's been really lovely!
I dare say it'll be downhill from now on but please let it be good tomorrow so I can finish my gardening!

Does that explain why he became a Socialist?

mangerton, Dundee Mills Observatory - I saw it, didn't realise it's for public use, what a lovely thing to have on your doorstep!

No but it could well explain why he didn't become a Socialist.
