Lovely & sunny here today. Still some snow on the ground; thought (hoped?) we might get some more yesterday as there were a few lonely flakes falling in the morning, but they didn't amount to anything.

No change, although it[s due for a service, so might call the plumber!

Here it doesn't look too bad for the weekend. I am particularly concerned for our cross-Atlantic friend Marthe, however, since there appear to be two deep lows about to hit the eastern seaboard this coming Sunday into Monday and Tuesday, the second of which is expected to bring storm-force winds and blizzard-type snowfall on Monday afternoon and overnight into Tuesday morning, with temperatures around minus 6-7 Celsius. I hope you're ready for this, Marthe!

After a chilly start, we've had a mild, if breezy, day in the Pennines -dry and grey, forecast to reach 6 degrees in a couple of hours.

Low bio-rhythms in the landscape....sky a white mist with left over snow still on Nothern slopes (bit like Sean R's thatch)....a few folk up on Farnhill moor....sky closed in....touching the void....

Yes, it was even down to - 4 C here in S London yesterday morning.

The models all point to the probability of snow everwhere next weekend, but especially down the eastern side of the country. Just thought you ought to be warned!

A lovely, bright day in the Pennines - the central heating indoors fooled me into thinking it must be mild outside again (all that sunshine!): much chillier than yesterday!

Judging by the ice on cars, yesterday morning was the coldest all week, indeed.

Filthy night last night, heard the wind and rain and was glad to have beaten it home and put the bike away for a couple of days.

Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Supposedly milder here but that damp winter chill really gets into the bones and makes it feel much colder than it really is.

Makes the first finger of my left hand go completely dead until circulation returns.

At the moment the BBC weather forecast indicates strong west-north-westerlies sweeping in on Wednesday as still in place on Friday, if slackening by then, and temperatures peaking at around the + 4/+ 5 mark. The latter would not be sufficient for any snow falling in heavier precipitations to settle to inconvenient proportions, this far south. That's as far into the future as the official forecasts go. My senses tell me that it could turn a lot colder over the weekend, with winds turning more in a directly northerly direction, so taking a directer route than diverting in a longer sweep across warmer waters; but we'll have to see nearer the time.

The first cold front of the week has just passed over as a very weak feature, producing 20 minutes' worth of light rain, and now the visibility's clearing to the north. 9 degrees C.

I had an email from marthe. She has been busy with various things and had not much time for going online but all is well with her and her family. Marthe and her HH are, in her words, ‘bracing for a big storm that's coming up the Atlantic coast towards New England. Strong winds, power outages, 2 or more feet of snow are predicted.’

Marthe sends her best wishes to all her Stormy Weather friends, especially to salymap, and thanks S-A for his concern.

                                And the same back!

Just been Skype-chatting with a family of friends one of whom teaches at Cornell Uni in upper New York state, and they're preparing battens for their hatches too - looks very wintry out of their windows! It's only just started - and you could see the snow teeming diagonally past their windows.

This is a still from the Cornell live cam just a moment ago:

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
