Bright sunshine early this morning (and I've started to notice it's getting lighter earlier) suddenly gave way to rain at about nine o'clock for about half an hour. Then clear skies again until around noon when we had snow - great cornflake-sized affairs, but not sticking - for a couple of hours or so. Chilly (about 3 degrees) but still mild for this time of year - back to clear skies and an afternoon sun as I write.

Strange how a few miles difference can make....no snow whatsoever....none....lovely sunny afternoon....
....aquaintance who I passed while out for a walk, pointed to large plob of green paint on my chin....good walk with the drumming and brass rhythms of Fela Kuti like a schematic circuit in my mind, breath and lips for an hour or so....

Some rain and hail just now from a passing shower line - possibly the same one reported by ferney earlier - but the sudden obliteration of the view to the north suggested more substantial precipitation there, and I was seriously half-expecting one or two lightning flashes. Interestingly the temperature, here, rose from 4 to 5 C in the middle of the shower, where I would have expected the downdraught to cause it to drop.
It seems that the SE here will be on a knife-edge tomorrow between mild air of southerly origin and cold northerlies, which are expected to move in later in the day, and thereafter dominate all UK weather for the week to come at least. This means we could just about be in for snow tomorrow, but it seems a bit early for them to decide if that will happen, and if so, whether or not the air will be cold enough, or the snowfall intense enough, for it to settle. Ooh, the suspense!!!

An amber weather warning has been issued across most of the UK until midday on Thursday. Pictured is a blanket of snow in Chatsworth, Great Longstone.

When the Wail and Depress wrote their headlines they exaggerated of course but even late last night the Met were forecasting -12 in Scotland and -7 here. Nothing changes quicker than the weather and it's been revised right down, in fact they are projecting only the East side (Scotland down to Yorks & Humber) will get the really cold weather. But alarm and despondency sells newspapers .....
Here, no frost and thick white mist first thing rapidly clearing to cloudless blue and brilliant sun, really nice outside at nearly 5° with zero breeze but ground absolutely sodden and saturated (whereas I thought it would still be rock hard and frozen) Tried to check Brummie Simon's forecast but not uploaded until later today as he's running a Weather School - sounds like the sort of thing S_A would like to attend?
