When I was young Sheffield was always known as the 'Dirty picture in the Golden Frame'. It was also claimed that even though we had a number of steelworks in the city it was the cleanest city in Western Europe. How much of that was due to the Smokeless fuel legislation I know not, but the prevailing winds blowing it over Rotherham probably helped.

Indeed , no doubt why all the big houses and rich suburbs are to the west of Sheffield bordering the Peak District !

I would have said the industrial east side of London was as a result of the wider deeper Thames.

Fondly recalled from an A-level geography lesson on a balmy summer afternoon, Peter Mann's Model of a British City (1965) was the first widely-known model of urban morphology to acknowledge the effect of wind direction on the pattern of residential development and industrial location within a city:



This model was based primarily on Huddersfield, Nottingham and Sheffield, medium-sized cities in northern
England. Concentric rings reminiscent of Burgess and sectors reminiscent of Hoyt are both apparent, but what
helps make this model unique is that it takes into account the direction of the prevailing south-westerly winds
(shown by the arrow). Industry is located to the north-east, where the industrial pollution is blown away from the
more expensive residential sector in the west and southwest which is the cleanest sector with the best air
quality. Less affluent working-men’s houses are located close to the industrial sector, as these people are
drawn here for work since they cannot afford to make long journeys to work. The working classes outnumber
the middle classes 3:1 in this model and housing density is higher in the poorer neighbourhoods in the C and D
sectors (so there are 2 C sectors to one A sector).

although of course, growing up in the world's foremost maritime city, () such things were not a significant factor.
Interesting from that graph is the suggestion/implication that better off workers/professionals would actively choose to live away from work places, whereas I would think that now, given a choice and appropriate quality housing , that might not be the case.

Back on topic, another frosty but stunning morning, with the most beautiful strip of orange sunrise about 7.15.

A rather bitterly cold day yesterday down these parts. Another today, methinks. My asthma is rather vulnerable to these cold snaps. Had an attack last night, but not too bad today. I am staying in as much as possible, despite the sun being out!

Yes - my asthma is triggered by very cold air, too, Bbm: and I always forget! A near-thing a couple of mornings ago, but managed to realise what was happening before any serious problem.

Beggar of a condition, isn't it - take care of yourself.

I sympathise with ferney and BBM as an asthma sufferer myself.
Managing to keep on top of it with steroids and inhalers but that cold air can really take your breath away.
I have to pause for a breather quite often when out walking the dogs.

that is fighting talk to a Londoner teamsaint ..... from wharves all along the city centre Thames down to the estuarial quays via the main docklands [not to forget the immortal Sammy Williams wharf at Dagenham] .... and the Trinity House and schools of navigation &c London was the centre of the British Maritime world ...


i confess that the self inflicted [50 years at 40 a day] lung problems i now have make going out in this cold an agony ... along with the arthritis and stenosis bending my walking body ... the scale of risk for a simple fall is now become a life threatening harm, whereas it was once a sore bum .... i am enjoying the sunny blue skies from behind firmly closed windows!

Its a fair cop, Jazzer !! I would love to transport back in time to see London Docks in their Heyday. There is a bit of it in your blood, as a Sotonian.

City demographics contd.: in the Pyrenees there is little space on riverbanks for buildings of any kind. This is one of the reasons why cooperators in the Basque Country have a flat right next to the factory they own and the bank they are insured by...as well as the Eroski supermarket down the way. Nobody thinks anything of it, and the cityscape is good-looking.

Just about got through this day today, with this cold air! At least there are fellow sufferers Don't know about anyone else, here, but I find that there are some people I know, who do not exactly understand this medical condition!
