    Hi Sigolene,

Thanks for your kind welcome. I didn't post on the old boards very much but did enjoy reading the posts. I look forward to getting hold of Lorna Sass's books. Both the vegetarian and food history sound interesting. I grew up in a large family in which we gathered at the table every evening for dinner. There was always ceremony as well as drama. The wooden mallets would have gone done a treat with our clan!

Thanks for the link to kusc. I also like university stations as they tend to have original, sometimes quirky programming rather than canned stuff. Here in RI I can get WRIU on air. One can also listen online. This is the station of the University of Rhode Island. Growing up in the Boston (Mass.) area I used to listen Harvard Radio, WHRB. They are known for their musical orgies...24 hours or so of a single composer. WBUR, Boston University Radio was also quite good. It was on WBUR that I first heard The Goon Show.

    Thanks,
    marthe

When the thaw comes there's going to be a heck of a lot of water about - hope no-one's in a flood area - thought I'd just cheer you up!

further to my earlier cheery post, the potholes are going to be good after this, aren't they? and no money to fill them - doom - doom.

Where do you find them - is it salymap's black cat with yellow eyes? More snow in the night here going out and clearing the drive, but not putting the snow on the pavement, is now an everyday ritual!

There's no shortage of money; just ask a retired banker.

Are ÂŁ5 notes really the appropriate filler for potholes?

I'd rather use the armfuls of unsolicited bumf I get thro' the door in spite of polite notice to the contrary - because it's a student area they think I have cash.

Morning all. No snow yet today in Salisbury. Yesterday's flurries did not settle. Usually, the Cotswolds and Salisbury Plain cop it and it bypasses us and the coastal plain. Surrey, Scotland, East Anglia and the North have my sympathy.

Once I've done my shopping I shall try to keep warm with painting another picture of Venice canals.

Thinking of the cost and availablity of salt for de-icing roads makes me think of the commodity used by most other cities on the continent and in a lot of North America. Mind you, I cannot see our British prudishness (part of Madame H&S's problem?) ever allowing its adoption. There they collect the urine from gentlemen's toilets, disinfect and gently perfume it and allow it to partially evaporate for storage. It does not smell nasty or of ammonia. Then when it snows they spray the main roads. It is as effective as salt. Once the infrastructure tanks are installed (usually underground by public toilets) they can collect it with sludge gulpers and take it to the storage depots. It becomes very effective and cheap. Just a thought. :)

                    Keep warm
                    Chris.

surely that's taking the p*ss a bit too far?

Nearly a foot here in the Peaks. And still snowing...

Maybe Chris could do a picture of Venice underwater - La Ville Englouttie? - or under snow, perhaps?
I have a friend who as professor of Earth Sciences spent a lot of his time trying to prevent the Serenissima disappearing down the plughole. But I fear it may be inevitable.

                            Venice under snow.....it does happen.

Feeling a bit guilty, as it's not too bad here in the Mendips! Not a lot of snow, and the roads are perfectly clear, but it's very cold, obviously. TV pictures look horrendous, though. I particularly feel for the people in Mid-Sussex like brassbandmaestro, as we moved from there six months ago

I see the BBC weather site is forecasting cloud and a subtropical 5 degrees in a very welcome westerly wind for Saturday, but it hasn't been stated on-air yet. Probably just a seaweed-feeling thing

There's something somehow fittingly British about the 'weather' thread being the number one hot (oops! sorry! ) topic ... It's a lovely sunny day here atm, and no snow left to sparkle. (Lovely atmospheric pic of St Mark's, Mary!)
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
