Lovely here today. Washing on line for a change, gardening (Tarleton Acres being put to bed for the winter), lawn mower set to mulch mode to chop up all the fallen leaves from our neighbours' trees - we look forward to westerly gales at this time of year, to blow them in the other direction.

With the noon temperature here reaching 18 C it looks like the predictions of record-breaking temperatures for the final day of October might turn out true. Nighttime temperatures for the month have worked out at 3 degrees C above averages. October last year was much the same.

20 degrees in the Pennines today! Twenty degrees!! It's Hallowe'en! I sat outside in my shirtsleeves with a book this afternoon: never done that this late ever before (I had to retrieve the folding chair from its Winter storage). And, yes - butterflies! Bizarre - and very welcome.

Well I have - among my most vivid recollections of trips around the UK was one to Lindisfarne (with the same vet'rin'ry mate who used to bring a gun and ammo into the Proms ) ... it was 1 November, and I recall very clearly that we sat for hours in shirtsleeves on some sand-dunes, eating crab sandwiches, necking inappropriate quantities of mead bought from the monastery shop (conveniently nearby, to allow supplies to be replenished), and baking agreeably...

It was a regular occurrence for a few years (as mentioned from time to time on the intrusive clappers/coughers threads.... So very tempting!)

Well I've been up hill and down dale, not to mention all round the houses and at the foot of our staris and I'm now back. Yesterday we got to 20.3° which, although not as hot as other parts, beat the Welsh Hottest Halloween record of 19° in Wrexham in 1979 (a bit of trivia for pub quizzers!) Decidedly cooler today at a meagre 14.5°

I've been puzzling over Petrushka's plea for a waterproof with a stable hood and fastenings. My Berghaus's zip (which also has press studs over the zip placket so it can just be fastened quickly by the poppers) fastens right up to the chin then the part of the hood that lies on the shoulders wraps over to fasten with 3 velcro strips almost to under the nose if you wrap it tight and the front of the hood is wired - not even a severe hurricane with dislodge it. (Obviously I'd never wear it like that unless I got caught in a blizzard halfway up the mountain because it's not the most flattering look!! ) I don't know which model it is, but it's Gore-Tex with mesh linings, I think Richard T. is an all-weather type of guy, perhaps he's got a recommendation?

I need something with a good sized hood that covers head and surrounds the face well. I also require one with a good, solid and strong zip. No toggle fastenings for the hood though (Velcro and press studs are ok) and, needless to say, warm and waterproof.

Ferney, I hate these early evenings too, you need to put some lights on timers then you don't ever have to come back to a dark house or go into a dark room.

... good idea about the timers, too; useful for when I go out to give the impression that I'm in to all the burglars who wait in cars to see which houses are empty. Mind you, I can also imagine that I'd forget to reset the timers for when I'm in and think that I'm having a power cut when suddenly the lights go out in the living room!
