Yes - lovely weather for the most part in the Pennines over the past week or so. But very chilly in the mornings: the sun needs until about ten o'clock before it starts working properly. I know the feeling.


Quite a lot of leaf-fall already here, too: I can't remember this much before the middle of October in previous years.

I have finally returned from my holidays in The North. The climate was agreeable, the air quality was good and there were not too many small earthquakes.

Monday last week I was on the Lancashire Riviera - well, I was on the beach at Lytham St. Annes basking in sunshine, very nice it was too. Even Stockport was bathed in glorious sunlight!! County Durham seemed a little cooler but still wonderfully bright and lustrous. All in all a good time was had by all and God Bless British Rail, not one delay as I meandered from Wales and back and forth across the Pennines. Today is like Summer again, tho' a chilly misty morn, is it true that it will continue like this until November?

I've been making the most of the good weather - 22 mile cycle ride up to the East End yesterday to check the house we always visited on Christmas Day. The back, which once looked onto marshalling yards, is now a business park, with high gates and lurid notices everywhere announcing admission only to employees; stuff that, thought I - that old man limping this way can't possibly be an employee - so I strolled in with me bike, all nonchalant-like, took a peek at what remains of the back garden to ascertain that the mulberry I knew as a child is indeed still there, and turned back only to be accosted by a uniformed security guard armed with CB, a lovely Jamaican guy actually, who was as sweet as a... doughnut when I explained my visit, and how pleased I was to have gained "closure", knowing that he would be familiar with pseudo-psychological jargon from the people he'd be dealing with on a daily basis. Then today I was off in the opposite direction, exploring the back lanes criss-crossing the North Downs west of Biggin Hill - about 26 miles in all, and with my knees now all done in it will have to be the Overground to my Tuesday evening jass gig in New Cross.

Where are you going BBM, home or away? Near neighbours of mine jetted off to Rome today - but no need to travel to search for sun, we were a high of 22.5° today, felt very chilly though at 6am this morning but reading only showed 7.8° Harvest moon was lovely all through the night, our Council now turn off street lights at midnight, so it's much better for star gazing.

Edit: <doh emoticon> just seen BBM means he's on hols NEXT YEAR!!!
