Lovely sunny morning early today - perfect for the village walk. The Met Office forecast sunshine with periodic bits of white cloud all day for this bit of the Pennines. It still is so forecasting.


Meanwhile, it's now pelting it down!

Yes - looks like this might be the first month this year with sub-normal temperatures, though the warm nights early on in the month might have compensated, and we've still got another week to go.

I would have expected showers "oop north" today, being nearer to the centre of the low pressure around which this cool WNW wind is circulating; there seems to be an inversion operating at this distance, with the potential shower cumulus instead of building into cumulonimbus spreading out at about 7,000 feet. Temperatures even here in S London have fallen to 9 C on 3 out of the last 4 nights, and 7 C on the fourth night, which represents a drop halfway down from midsummer to midwinter normals!

My ex-next doors moved to Huddersfield, and always refer to it as "oop north". I did warn them but they claim to be very happy there...

It certainly feels like it up here. Must be hovering around freezing and is the coldest I can remember for August. It's the month when you're usually throwing off the blankets in the stifling heat. Right now, it's time to put the electric blanket ON! Unbelievable!

It must be the darkest August Bank Holiday I remember. A young friend couldn't believe it originated when 'servant girls' were given a DAY off to visit their family.

I'm truly sorry to hear of your weather down south. Today in Drumnadrochit we have blue skies and bright sunlight - at the moment, anyway. Come winter I'll be looking for commiserations from all you southernites.
