a lovely day, but for those of you who know Eastbourne pier - a big fire

A devastating fire tears through Eastbourne Pier, leaving the structure an "absolute red, molten, mess of flame and smoke".

That is terrible news - it looks as if a superb (if underused) theatre there has been completely destroyed. One of the best of its type.

EDIT: Ah, my mistake - the theatre is at the other end of the pier, which seems untouched by the fire. I hope the damage can be repaired, though.

I am partcularly sad about this because Eastbourne is not very far away from me and it just down the road from where my son and girlfriend live too!

The word 'insurance' leaps to mind but perhaps that's too cynical?

                  Disappears, in my case.

Make the most of today, especially SE of a line from Bristol to The Wash, approximately, because it's all downhill from tomorrow.

If you're NW of that line, it's already gone downhill, so it should make little difference.

And - as I am above that line I can confirm it's just started raining and has become very windy and rather chill. However, the clouds are moving so fast I don't think it'll set in yet. In fact this week so far has been cooler than last, but still around or just below 24°, the most noticeable difference is the temperature in the evening/night and a duvet has for the first time in ages been necessary.

As to piers and fires - well it's because of the wood, seems this one started with an electrical fault behind wooden panelling but I do wonder why they don't have to have sprinkler systems.

enough of this despondent talk, 12 tone, I need 4 good days of weather near the Hampshire coast from the 14th to the 17th, and good news in this direction will be very welcome..........

Lovely day down here today, good sunny spells. Had a day off, and went down to Bournemouth beach, just near the pier, for a splendid day out.

"Brummie Simon" is predicting changeable weather up to around the middle of the month, followed by more settled conditions, so that could coincide with what you're looking for, vints.

Meanwhile a very wet (and windy in Scotland) weekend looms. And "Brummie Simon" has been A VERY SILLY BOY, as can be discovered by clicking onto his site long-term forecast and wondering at the state of his pate!
