Meanwhile, thunderstorms reaching the SW aproaches are expected to hit Anna during tonight!

Indeed they did hit here, but of course us mere Provincials are not considered at all newsworthy when - shock horror emoticon - a bit of lightning is seen over Canary Wharf!

This morning I expected a bit of freshness in the air but it's very dank and murky, when I went past the Black Mountains at 8am they had all but disappeared in the hazy gloom. Supposed to clear, hope it does, absolutely airless at the mo and around 20°, tomorrow looks a bit grim, take your Berghaus to the races Pet! (Missed the two weather programmes except the last 20 mins of Horizon re jet stream, will catch up)

I'm sure I've made the point before that nothing happens in this country until or unless it happens in London.

Anyway, miss m and I got back from London yesterday evening after a most enjoyable short break. I must admit though to finding the heat most oppressive, and I take my hat off (well, I would if I wore one) to Londoners who seem to take it all in their stride, if walking, or in their pedalling if biking. We were staying in Greenwich, and the river boats are definitely Good Things.

It's fine, so long as one need have no recourse to the Underground. They were saying that most of the deep-level tube should be air-conditioned by 5 years' time - the stations, at any rate. It seems there are practical problems in this regard with actual rolling stock - space for air conditioning units, from what I remember. Glad you enjoyed your time here, mangs: Greenwich is still an attractive place, although gone now are most of the old independent shops along with most of their bohemian atmosphere - replaced by the usual chain outlets.

Those storms were what they call high-base, and as can be seen the lightning was cloud-to-cloud, as opposed to cloud-to-ground, which,. at our latitude, is more associated with low-base storms. The latter grow initially conventional cumulus, associated with ground-up convection, whereas high-base are associated with upper air systems independent of ground level heating, and convergence at the altocumulus level. I wonder what tonight's sort will be... they were quite concerned earlier about what they were expecting.

That's most interesting. I didn't know they had AC in mind, but it raises the question - where would they dump the heat? If you put AC in trains, it would perforce be dumped into the tunnels, and thence to the stations, presumably. AC would then be required in the stations with vents to street level. The costs would be enormous, I imagine.

Or am I missing something? Any heating/cooling engineers on the forum?

From what was briefly said on yesterday's local News at One, yes, it is the stations that are to be air-conditioned.

Oh, we're fine, SA - thanks for the thought. As usual, the Philippines has its own names for these things, so it wasn't Rammasun (the Thai god of thunder - or something like that). No, we had our own name.

Well, Glenda was never more than category 1 in Roxas (huh! rubbish! Yolande was the only 5 ever to hit the Phils - and it's a logarithmic scale!)

Having said that, 'Glen or Glenda' did kill 20 or so in Luzon (the big island in the north, where Manila is) so there's plenty of grieving people - and even more homeless. Isn't nature wonderful?

We've had several days of rotten weather with short power cuts. It's raining right now.

We are on the green ("unaffected") island at 6 o'clock(ish), shaped roughly like an upside-down triangle with a worrying growth. That is Panay. Roxas City is on the northern side, towards the east. There's an orange island that is pointing very threateningly at Roxas City. That's the island of Masbate.

And I think we are all very grateful that in the UK all we have to complain about is a few days of rain!

No complaints here so far as it's not been as bad as forecast, storm at 1.30am, sheets not forks, torrential rain, few thunder rumbles, didn't last long. At 5.30am torrential stair rods, cats & dogs and probably frogs and small fishes, again just sheet lighning, not a lot of thunder, carried on for over 2 hours, cleared so as I had shopping to get I went out at 8 o'clock wearing rainproof, might as well have worn a Tshirt, not a drop fell on me and very warm. Got back half an hour and ago and - the heavens have opened again (so I count myself lucky to have picked the probably only dry window in the day to venture out)
