Yes - looks like a gradual breakdown, starting in some places today as shattered scoures then becoming general by Friday, with lots of rain in the south. It seems there is a heat/energy build-up in the seas off our shores right now that has to be discharged to re-balance the atmosphere - surface water temperatures 4-5 degrees C above the late June norm - very nice for bathing, however. "Brummie Simon then predicts poor weather until halfway through next week, followed by a brief break of dry weather, followed in turn by a dismal July, I'm afraid. So, make the most of it while we can, say I!

We need some devoutness for July, by the sounds of it Cali! Although today is noticeably cooler, thankfully!

A very pleasant day here, and likewise cooler. Thick cirrus tufts now invading the sky from the south west, and likely to make for a dramatic sunset, are hinting at the thundery character of the rain slowly creeping into Cornwall tonight, and on into the West Country and along the south coast tomorrow afternoon. A friend of mine is already making his way down to Glastonbury!

This afternoon I succeeded in locating one of the two last remaining vestiges of the old Surrey Canal, just alongside the Charing Cross/London Bridge railway line to Croydon, between Forest Hill and Sydenham stations. Lewisham council made a point last year of having created a little nature reserve at the spot; unfortunately the gateway is heavily padlocked now, blocking access. Maybe they decided having it open to the public might risk children drowning; however I couldn't help noticing two tents (temporarily vacated) just outside the area, and I am sure they weren't holidaymaking campers! Tomorrow, if I'm up to it, I intend taking to the tow path alongside the Thames between Hammersmith and Kew Bridge - I believe there are some rather nice pubs along there!

The hope for many will be that the unsettled weather is just a brief interlude as we move into July. Indeed, there does seem to be signs of some cheer, albeit not necessarily wall to wall sunshine. There's a signal for temperature to be around average or slightly warmer and in the southern half of the country, slightly drier than we would normally expect at this time of year too. Further north things look a little wetter and a little windier but still with some warmth around.

Tentative signs of things settling down in the south towards the end of the week...

.... at the moment, I think we can suggest reasons to be cheerful for all. Early indications lean towards a settling down of the weather with hints at some more prolonged, drier spells and a rise in temperature.

It has just started to rain here in the Pennines, after a warm, slightly overcast day with a gentle breeze and frequent patches of sunshine. Perfect walking weather, so I spent three hours on Ilkley Moor (carrying, but not wearing my hat, which counts as "baht" as far as I'm concerned). I was hoping to get to see the Cup and Ring stones, but couldn't find them, which was disappointing, but a really good walk - I practically had the Moor to myself (unless everyone else was crowded round the Cup & Ring stones!) and there are some glorious views.

Home to yet another batch of letters of red-taped insensitive incompetence from my energy providers and the PO. I got so fed up I switched my suppliers, so now I'm worried that I won't have any gas or electricity over the Winter!
